Evening all

I've been having some problems with my small turbo not getting on boost and have been to a garage to plug it in and get some fault codes but not sure which ones relate to my problem

Codes were as follows

4B10- smooth running control
4B11- smooth running control

4501- exhaust gas recirculating control deactivation
4530- charge air pressure small turbo control deactivation

Now I know 4530 has something to do with it, but not sure what exactly

Does anyone know anything about codes, especially these ones, and their meaning? My small turbo doesn't spool at all. It's like it gets bypassed and the big turbo comes on about 3k.

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks

Sounds like it's a problem with the vacuum system that controls the wastegates on the turbo and also controls the EGR opening too.

It could be something as simple as a split vacuum hose, check them all and get them replaced. If the problem persists I would be looking at the pressure converters.

The hoses all seem fine. I had to piece one together as it had split completely, but no change.

The pressure converters. Any way to test they're working correctly?

I would have said if you have two (I think there would be one for the EGR and one for the turbo) that you could swap them over, but not great if both are having problems.

Have you got any way of check the vacuum or vacuum pump?

Check the hoses inside the foil heatshield above the turbo, failing that, its the actuator.

Usual course of action as said above is to swap them both over, but if both are gone you won't see any difference. Any chance you could borrow one off anyone you know with a x35d??

No mate. Never had any light come on, just this problem occurred one day.

I would just take it to an Indy, but just worried they'll do the usual process of elimination and it'll be the last thing knowing my luck!

I've found a site which says code 4530 means boost pressure actuator, regulation pressure too low.

Also explains code 4501 as Exhaust gas regulation, Negative deviation or air mass too high.

Are you absolutely sure that you don't have a vacuum leak? Do you know anyone with a smoke generating leak tester who could check the system before you start throwing parts at it?

No mate, not absolutely sure but from what I can see, there doesn't seem to be any.

The cars in for pads today so I'll have a good butchers under the bonnet tonight. It's a right bh trying to follow the pipes in situ.

If there is a boost leak, it'll only be in the small turbo area as the large turbo still does the business!

Bit of research online pointed me to this link :

http://www.bmwland.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&...

If all is ok with your vacuum system it seems the next thing to look at is this. I know in the end the outcome was different but the suggestions by MikeS seem to be pointing to what is wrong with yours. Part no.4 in this diagram :

It's apparently the valve inside that pipe that fails which then causes the actuator to fail. When this happens the flow is just all directed to the big turbo.

I'm sure (might be wrong) that this bit has its own actuator? Maybe I could feel if it's free moving or not

Correct, it does, it's the round part that's next to the number 11 in the picture.

In a 330d now.Ended up changing the entire vacuum pipe system on my 335 d after multiple failures with splits, re routed half of it as well, stupid idea running it over the Turbo. Halfords sell the pipe and joiners if required.

Am about most Saturdays and in Romford at work odd times of the week when not out on site.

I think I may have just got to the bottom of this, although I can't stop thinking its not the problem, seeing as I had a completely severed hose in the system.

I've found the vacuum tank has a snapped nipple on it and therefore leaks constant. I can't help but think I may have snapped it pulling hoses around!

Could this cause only the first turbo to stop working?

Hopefully, if it has been broken all along then Roofer, you da man! Right all along mate
