AFAIK OE has no form of Rules..

If you were to use full blown Outlook, you can use rules to process your messages in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways..

Unfortunately, however, Outlook does need to be open for the rules to run.

Ooutlook Express (at least v 6)does have a basic message rules system which does allow you to send a reply on recieving a message, however, as said, it does require for outlook express to be open, so not ideal for an "Out of Office" type style arrangement but not impossible.

Look under tools--> message rules--> Mail

Download incredimail for free. It has all the message handling abilities you will ever need and it also has a spam handler that is easy to use.

The direct download installer link is here it will auto install and then ask you whether you want to import all your mails and contacts from Outlook / Express.

The previous versions were buggy and unstable but I have been running it as a business platform for over a year now with no problems whatsoever.

The free version has a small advert on the page with a link to their website (well you can't blame them as it's free) but the premium one is only about £20 legally, or there are numerous cracks on emule etc if you wanted to 'try' it first as a full product.

Also the notifiers will announce an email as it arrives which is good as you don't have to have it open.

Do these systems mean you have to leave the computer on and connected to the internet all the time you're away, or can it be set up at the server somehow?

All of the systems mentioned on this thread are local, so yes, the machine would need to be on and connected to the net to give an "Out of office" reply..

Exchange allows server side rules (specifically OOA), but the investment in an exchange server is a little OTT for home use!
