I'm thinking of setting up a Gourmet hot dog stall for the summer with the intension on attending various markets and summer events selling quality fast food not the usual rubbish served from a Burger van.

The concept is simple but I believe if done right will be a winner.

The concept...

An American style Hot Dog stall selling a quality product with various toppings, fronted by a clean/upmarket looking van/stall.

Chilli Dog - Topped with home made chilli of various strengths

Chilli cheese Dog

Philly Cheese Dog

Philly cheese steak

Home made gourmet Burgers with various toppings

Various other American classics

Etc

So over to you what do you think will it be a winner?.

I'd have a look at German sausages - starting with Bratwurst - one of my faves...

will definately be a winner. American themed burger/meat joints are pretty popular at the moment, especially in london.

Sounds great to me, I'm drooling already!
My personal preference would be the chilli cheese dawg! Have a look at the MvF coney island hotdog episodes for a simple chilli mix. ( it could have been on diners drive in and dives?)

You could also serve icecream coke floats, garlic/cheese fries

Look at the regional varieties you get in the US - what you get in chicago is different to NY, and down south etc. Not just toppings, but the dogs themselves.

If you can capture some of those you'll be onto a winner. I'd also consider some american beverages, wink wink nudge nudge biggrin

MvF coney island hotdog - was that the one with two outlets next door to each other?

I had the same idea since watching mvf.

There are so many possibilities with this, english or german style sausages, breads, toppings, meats or veggie.

It can't fail.

Please open one near me. biggrin

Don't forget to cater for the British market I.E.

Cumberland / Lincolnshire sausages in a bun.

I've wanted to try a corn dog, but didn't see any last time I was in America, going to put that right in June!

As suggested above, consider different type of sausage not just 'hotdog', lots of variety will encourage repeat custom.

I once got a (vege-)burger from a vegetarian burger van at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, they had a huge variety of salads, toppings and sauces to dollop onto your burger (and a decent quality bread roll) so you didn't mind that it had no meat in. If someone could offer a similar service but with meaty products I'd be their best customer.

ETA: another thought... if opening somewhere within range of a lunchtime/work crowd, then wrap the 'dogs up tightly in paper like sandwich places do and then you'll sell to people who wouldn't buy an open hotdog or want to eat it in the street.

Yes thats the one, used to be owned by two brothers I think?

As for the adding the uk sausages I would stay true to your initial idea and keep it simple. There are already carts/stalls doing uk sausages, burgers, hog roast etc. I think its far more attractive to have a simple idea well executed than diversifying too much.

Yes I agree, however if I was at a local farmers market I would try mini (local sausage) toad in the hole rolled up in the pudding with home made relish or apple sauce

We have a place in Leeds - I've only been once but it was "ok", certainly nothing as special as the menu prices might suggest. The £1.50 ones from Costco (with drink) are superior IMO.
