Skoda Superb Greenline II - Experiences?
Discussion
Did post this in VW/Audi/Seat but didn't have any response.
Just wondering if anyone has actually driven one of these?
105bhp in a 1.5 tonne car sound ludicrous, but most of the journalist reviews are very favourable.
Looked at one this weekend with a view to ordering one as my next company car, in Elegance trim the interior of the car is simply amazing for the money.
I don't expect it to be fast or in anyway sporty and it doesn't need to be. I'd be quite happy to waft in that and use my bike and the wifes car for a bit of fun at the weekend.
Is the car upto the job though? On paper it would only cost me around £220/month including fuel, this is compared to £254 for a Passat 140TDI Sport (with considerably less toys and a bit less space).

105bhp, but around 180lb.ft of torque. No it's not going to be fast, but it will get up to speed and up hills easier than a 105bhp, 100lb.ft, petrol engine will in the same car.
One of my colleagues has just taken delivery of the V6 Superb Elegance estate and it is a bloody good car. So much equipment for the money it's ridiculous. The ride is not bad and the space....its like a ballroom inside!
Obviously the V6 is fairly prompt but if you arent bothered about performance on the one you are looking at I would say you cant go wrong for the money.

My first car was a Triumph 2000 with a monumental 90bhp from the 2 litre straight six under the bonnet, mated to a 3 speed auto. I wasn't fast, but it certainly did the job perfectly well and cruised at 90 without a problem (unless you regard fuel economy as a problem!)
105bhp mated to a 6 speed box will be plenty to get the job done.

I have that car in non-greenline spec.
It is fine. It can cruise at illegal speeds without breaking a sweat. At legal speeds it is sufficiently fast and economical.
The torque is what saves it. In lower gears it is ponderous and doesn't want to be rushed, but once into the higher gears and at higher speeds it is fine.
If you want a big, cheap, economical car for bashing out lots of motorway miles at 70mph it is great!

I looked closely at these and I could have easily chosen one, but I ended up going for a 2.0TDi Passat (140PS).
Althought the 1.6 TDi looks more efficient on paper, the Honest John "real MPG" site shoed that the 2.0 TDi seemed to get a better average MPG. I wonder if the 2.0 is more comfortable at 70+ mph.
I would still be happy with a 1.6 Superb though, so go for it!

Thanks for the replies so far.
Just to add I have a fuel card, so not particularly bothered about MPG and neither are the company as long as it's good for 40mpg+ average which I guess it would be.
Nail on the head with being a car to waft in comfort rather than offering 'performance'.
I could have a 140 Passat as some of my colleagues, but they're still not a quick car (despite what my colleagues seem to think!) and it would cost me more in BIK.
A nice, comfy car with toys is my priority, ideal for visiting family with the 2 dogs and a load of luggage, rear passenger space is a real bonus as it is nice to be able to ferry parents around in comfort while we're visiting and I suppose it's not bad for work associates either lol. All this while being as cheap on BIK as possible.
I did seriously consider a Lexus CT200h, but the boot is just too small in reality and rear passenger space is also pretty cramped.
Have also considered a Nissan Qashqua, but for some reason I'm just not conviced.

Yes it has 5 gears.
The reviews I've read suggest 5 gears is right for the car though and that it is better than the 6 speeder in the Passat with the same engine.
I've had 5 speed cars for years and never really thought any of them needed another gear. Only our last few cars have been 6 speeders and even now driving a 5 speeder I don't feel the want of another gear.
It was different back in the day with 4 gears, always felt as though 5th was needed in those cars.

I think you're missing the point re the gears. The reviews I've read suggest 5 gears is right for the car though and that it is better than the 6 speeder in the Passat with the same engine.

I have a 1.6 Golf Bluemotion which has pretty much the same "eco" setup as the Skoda Greenlines. As part of the eco setup, the gear ratios are much longer than your normal car. In my opinion, having the 6th gear is a no brainer.
When you actually drive one, you'll probably agree it needs an extra gear.
