Sadly, the time has come in my life where I need to change from the less practical fun car, to an estate (reason being didn't fancy the forthcoming german shepherd on the rear seats of the R32!!)

I am looking to spend around 6-7k. I want something that is still reasonably pokey and has reasonable running costs too. I'm thinking the petrol Octavia VRS estate, and was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions?

I have searched the forum and read the article about the proper sporty estates (RS4 etc) but they are too dear, hence the request for some advice from some of you guys that have hopefully been in a similar position recently!!

Thanks,

Paul

We just bought a Mondeo ST220 Estate and love it smile Cost £4.5k with 49k on the clock and an extensive history. Not the last word in pace but certainly gets to the legal limits quick enough and sounds fantastic too!

I'm going to suggest the Jag X-Type 3.0 V6. It's my standard response.

Thanks so far guys. Not even considered those two i`m ashamed to admit.

Quite a nice looking ST220 here Donatello, but top end price wise maybe..

That looks lovely. It is 18 months younger than ours with 10k less miles but not sure it justifies £1500 price difference. All I will say is that the equipment on ours is more than enough but I wish I had Sat-Nav and Ipod connectivity. That one does so has all you really need.

They are MASSIVE inside and I think they are a lovely steer. Fuel isn't wonderful but if you are sensible it can be decent enough. Ours is at exactly 25mpg (indicated on the computer) but on the run home from collecting it I got 33mpg and I wasn't being gentle.

Edit - I also noticed you mention a new dog. We have two and they weren't really suited to life on the back seat of our Mk1 Golf Cabrio so that is now garaged and we bought the ST. They LOVE the boot, it has a reasonably low entry, plenty of floor space and they can still sit/stand/walk around. Plenty of space and at the moment I am looking to buy some equipment from Hatchbag or similar.

Go try one out, see for yourself. I think you will be suprised that the Ford does it all so well.

I bought the 4 pot 2.5 a year ago, for 4k, 2005 with 92k on it. It now has 117k on it and its been fine other than a failed cat, which I suppose can happen to any older car.

Nice place to sit on the motorway, ok equipment levels, really just missing sat nav, leather heated pews, climate, nice big sunroof, cruise, 30mpg and my local grease monkey looks after it no probs.
The usual PH answer is the 3.0 spec B, though at 20mpg I didnt fancy it for my 400 mile weekly commute wink

Big enough for us to do 2500 miles last summer through Europe - France, Switzerland, Germany.

Mercedes E430, without a doubt! That's 300bhp to play with, and all the toys.

Big Volvo wagon. Tough as old boots and if you go for a T5 quick enough and reliable. Had mine 7 years and no real dramas.

I think these are pretty good value for money if you can get over the 'gangsta' looks; got a 3.0 Merc diesel engine, so they're pretty potent and the engine should be nice and refined.

Some good other suggestions though.

Cheers for suggestions guys. Those of you already with an estate and a bigger dog - do they tend to trash the boot a fair bit? I have seen these "Boot buddies" and "hatchbag" products on sites, but was wondering how much protection they give?

I am unsure whether to spend around 3-4k on an older car (whatever I go for) and accept it will be trashed to a degree, or spend around 7-8k and hope it wont get trashed, but risk losing a fair bit if it does?

You tend to find the claws will scratch the bumper as they climb/jump in, though you can get protective strips for most cars to guard against this.
The boot itself doesn't get trashed, but the problem I have is getting the dog hairs out of the carpet. You can spend hours with a stiff brush, hoover and a roll of sticky tape but I can never get it all out.
There must be some kind of secret to removing dog hair that I haven't figured out yet!

How about getting a rubber boot liner and removing the parcel shelf so the dog can sit in the boot of the r32?

I have a GSD x Rottie and this is what I would do, I have had her in a TT and z4 and my 330 and just put a towl down if I've taken her swimming or seat covers and has never damaged the car, you could also just fold the rear seats down so it could sit on the back of them?
