Some advice would be much appreciated please. I have a 2001 Boxster S and have not driven it over the winter. On Saturday I tried to jump the battery but put the jump cables on the wrong way I.e. red to black and vice versa. Some pages on the net say that the alternator will need replacing while others say that the battery is self protected from this action. With the jump box fully recharged last night I was able to start the car but the battery light stayed on and the engine cut out when the charger pack was removed. The charger pack was on for about 10 minutes and I was revving the engine....

Your advice is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Robert

I cringe at saying this due to the cost of replacement but you may have cooked the ECU. OPC or good indy visit is on the cards I recon.

You might be lucky and have just fried the regulator on the alternator - about £35-£50 to replace but the alternator may have to come off to get to it.

Horrible feeling, so good luck. Time manufacturers made it impossible to put leads on wrong way round; colour coding is not the answer obviously, including those that are colour blind.
