Job Hunting

So today was the final straw and so I am officially now looking for a new job.

How does one go about this these days? I have always had jobs find me rather than vice versa.

So what's the best route into finding gainful new employment? Recruitment consultants? Websites?

Any suggestions anyone has would be most welcome - I am at a particularly low ebb and need to crack on with extracting myself from my current employment situation.

As said, it depends on what you are good at. One would rather have thought that in any particular industry the employees would already know what the best way of finding a new job in that industry is, however, you might be looking for a change?

When I couldn't get a job, I knew there was somebody who would hire me, and be glad to get me too. Me.

Maybe let the 'incident' and its effect on you subside for a few days prior to making any rash decisions? if after all that a new employer or career bekons, then give me a shout and I may be able to assit. Good luck!

It's not any one incident - it's been building up over the last 18 months.

In terms of marketable skills I have spend the last 12 years working in roles across Logistics & Supply Chain.

I did 2 years working in logistics operations - running warehouse ops / transport ops etc.

Then I did 18 months key account managamement looking after the major retail accounts

Then I moved to another company and did 2 and a half years selling 3rd party logistics services to major customers.

Then I did a couple of years selling warehouse automation and warehouse management software - leading the UK sales team.

For the last 4 years I have been selling strategic global trade and supply chain software all over the world to major blue chips. Very strategic technical sales selling at a very high level. That role has seen me travel all over the world, speaking at major industry events and generally building the EMEA business up from scratch. Lots of responsibility - high pressure etc etc etc.

I've certainly had enough of field sales now - I've spent so much time away from home over the last 4 years and have missed my kids growing up.

Now I'm thinking either moving up to a Sales Director role within the industry - or using what I have learned to take a strategic supply chain role on the 'client' side.

Not sure where to start really - I've never had to look for a job before - they have kind of found me.

At that level then, and with a decent LinkedIn profile, a well sorted outcomes based CV and just simply letting a few of the better specialist headhunters know you're looking for a move, I would imagine you would be snapped up in no time. Good luck!

3 words = network, network and network again!

Statistically speaking, you are probably only a maximum of 1 contact away from your next boss - be creative, do your research and make your own approaches - dont rely on Agencies!

LinkedIn is your friend but dont use it (the LinkedIn email system) to communicate with potential employers - use normal email, except when applying for LinkedIn Jobs - when you should also attach a structured/focused personal letter together with your CV - apply without a letter/pitch = FAIL.

I start a new job in a few weeks. Most of the opportunities I got came from me putting my CV on JobSite.

Be warned though, if your skillset is in demand you'll get ALOT of agents contacting you. I had 20 voicemails the day after I uploaded my CV

Ok thanks guys.
I spent yesterday writing my CV - which to be honest looks pretty good.

I think I'll take look at using a couple of good, reputable recruitment consultants/headhunters to begin with.

Uploading to sites like Jobsite/Monster etc sounds like i will get deluged by no-mark recuruitment consultants.

Linkedin isn't a bad idea - but I'm connected to so many of my colleagues on there that if i start updating my profile significantly it's going to start raising red flags with my senior management - and I could really do with finding something else before they sack me!

I did this recently and I realised that normally every update sends off a message to everyone of your contacts that your information has changed. Fortunately the first change that I did was relatively minor but as I got some feedback from people I realised that I needed to do it differently so I looked around linked in and there are settings available that allow you to limit who gets these updates or to stop them going out altogether. Obviously people stopping by your page will see the new profile but my experience is that existing contacts mostly only come by when you post an update.

I always start with agencies. Suck up the piss poor pay for a bit, get a shoe in at the decent company you will be placed with sooner or later, then see if you can get a decent position with said company. There are a whole raft of new regs for employment agencies now, with regards to holiday / sick pay. It's not as stty an option as it once was.

Besides using LinkedIn & recruitment consultants, I'd suggest also looking on jobsites like http://www.adzuna.co.uk/jobs It has a good feature where you can find jobs and see where you have connections that can help put your CV to the right person (emailed CVs often go into a "blackhole" otherwise) It pays to canvas as many jobs as possible just to see that ONE perfect job you like
