Parents....!!! A Word of Warning
Discussion
I have just heard a family friend has had quite a nasty accident on the A24 north of Worthing.
His daughter (age 7) was in the rear of the car using a standard seat belt. She was thrown out of the belts in to the back of one of the front seats and now has some quite nasty injuries to her face and mouth.
She should (of course) have been using a booster seat and I guess we can all learn from this.
I've been out to my garage today and reinstated my 8 year olds booster seat.

Don't get this I'm afraid. My kids have/will remain in their booster seats until they are old/tall enough that they are no longer required. It's not hard information to find and hardly difficult or expensive to do.
Too many lazy parents about who either can't be bothered to buy a booster, can't be bothered to check if one is required or just don't give a s
t about their kids safety.
No excuse IMO.

No I agree, no excuses. I think they will learn big time from the experience.Too many lazy parents about who either can't be bothered to buy a booster, can't be bothered to check if one is required or just don't give a s

It defenately brings it home.
I'm thinking that I should also suggest to a chap that lives nearby to me that taking their baby out in the car whilst balanced on the wife's lap is a bad idea, a very very bad idea, (I saw them out the other day).

I was unfortunate to come across a child in just such a position thrown in to the windscreen. Fortunately the injuries, which were extensive, were not life threatening.
But the scarring must have caused years of surgery and heartache.
Criminal.
Firstly, hope the kid is OK.
I always wonder about the value of just a booster seat base - we have both full boosters with seat backs (that are removable) that the belt threads through, and just a seat base, that has no back so just raises my daughter 3 inches or so. I seldom use it as it looks to me that it's no safer than just wearing a seatbelt for her - she is tall for her age.
Anyone shed any light on safest seats for kids coming out of harness seats?
I remember seeing a seat made for a foreign market - USA I think - that is an almost full size harness child seat, that has belts etc strong enough for bigger kids. Thought it was a great idea and was going to get one, until I saw the price!!

Whilst my little boys mum is adamant he doesn't need one, I wont let my boy in the car with out one!
The Ex says he's old/tall enough to not need one?
I've checked the DVLA sites etc, but tbh It's a bit unclear. So, until I see fit ,my little boy will stay in his booster seat.
As for what they do/the reason, I could be wrong but as I understand, They lift the kids above the point where they can slip under the seat belt entirely. Not to mention the injuries that seat belts can do to their necks .
ETA: Hope the family/kid in the crash is OK, and good thread
