As is being reported today the MOD are suggesting they sight ground to air missiles on Shooters Hill in London as an last line of defence for the Olympics.

Now correct me if I am wrong but if a terrorist decides to fly a plane into an Olympic stadium are we really going to shot it down over London so sending the wreckage to come down on another part of London or am I missing something here?

And who would take responsibility for making the order?

I like the Defence Secretary's nickname though!

Well, by the time Cameron contacts 'Mr Bean' in France and then gives a call to Barrack, it'll be too late

If they can identify and then destroy a hijacked aircraft that has taken off from City Aiport, before it gets to Stratford, fair play to them! hehe

if the shot-down plane falls norf' of the river, it can only cause improvement. alternatively, i can suggest the terrorists change course towards thamesmead, lewisham, woolich or abbey wood. it can only do them good...

So if this happens that therefore means the olympics / London is a very credible target - I appreciaet this may be stating the obvious, but hasnt the terrorist world been quiet of late.

So do we reckon something will happen?

It's been quiet because all the civil infringements, surveillance and increased Police/Court powers have been working!!

Terrorists prefer soft targets. So while we are concentrating on the Olympics, expect something to go bang somewhere else, no doubt by Fifth Columnists.

I did some work for a London based anti terrorist cop recently and he told me they were really worried that an attack during the Olympics was a real possibility.

When Obama came to Oslo to get his Nobel prize, we had mobile launchers in the hills around town.

I think it's just the done thing for high profile events now.

That might be his opinion though, I can't imagine he'd let official secrets go if they had any intelligence to suggest that mate.

Being pragmatic/bloody minded, whilst London is built up the chances of it coming down anywhere that it'll cause as many casualties as a packed olympic stadium are fairly slim. And there is likely to be some deterrent effect in any case.
