So which would you choose....
Discussion
Good folks of PH Heppers has a choice to make.
Looks like this summer we are going to holiday with another family and have a nice house in the Charente Maritime region of France and the other chap and myself are going to take the car while the other halves and offspring will fly.
My quandary, X-Type or XJ-S?
I will be doing all the driving as the other chaps health will not allow it.
Not that fussed on the cost differential on fuel.
We will have another car there as the other halves will get a rental from the airport as there is a total of seven of us.
Head says X-Type heart says XJ-S...
Thoughts folks?

Are you seriously asking this question!?
Wafting to the south of France in an XJ-S or a well trimmed Mondeo?
Thoughts folks?

ps If you take my advice we need never mention it again
Fair comment well made.. I was just lamenting on the fact most of my friends said why would you drive a 25 year old car 1500 miles when you can drive a modern one.
Honestly my first thought was I need new friends!

So PH always helps there as I actually like most of my friends.
I have actually got to go for it haven't I? I mean either that or resign my man and PH cards simultaneously....
Well some point late July expect a "My Euro XJ-S trip with some smashing pictures" or an advert in the classifieds for a b
ksed XJ-S with severe branch damage aka Basil Fawlty!

I did 3,300 Euromiles in my (then) 40 year old Jensen Interceptor II a couple of summers ago (London-Burgundy-Cevennes-Monaco-Lombardy-Abruzzo-Rome-Orvieto-Chamonix-Paris-London). I bought my cover from the RAC, and used it only once, on the last day of the trip, when I had an ignition problem in Paris. I used enough petrol and oil to make at least 97 polar bears homeless, and for this I feel bad, but in other respects I have no regrets. Do it!

Epic trip chap.... I would be interested to hear what sort of prep and spares and kit you took... Never done this kind of thing in a classic so any advice appreciated. The car was in good nick at the time, so other than checking levels and pressures, buying Eurocover, and slapping those RHD/LHD filters on the headlamps, I did no special prep.
I took spare fuses (lots), bulbs (legally required anyway), plugs, spare belts, buckets of oil, coolant, autobox and brake fluid, 2 warning triangles and hi-viz (legally required). A fire extinguisher and first aid kit, of course. I took a full tool roll and a power pack. Also tape - lots of tape.
I also took a blonde and some of her shoes. OK, lots and lots of her shoes.
Here is a picture which contains, amongst other things, a fancy ride and a b
h. Location: Hotel Chateau Les Vaults de Lugny, Burgundy (recommended!)

Problems: One of the two electric fans started to do a go slow when in hot, hot Italy, but we survived, just. One of the electric windows jammed open, and later jammed shut. The stereo stopped working, and then started again. Unbeknownst to me, the coil was on the way out. This started to manifest itself in Paris. A cheery mec with a Gitane bolted to his lower lip did a good get me home bodge fix.
Petrol bill: gigantenormotronical. Road toll: average. Vandalism or theft: nil. Speeding fines: 60 Euros for hoonage through the deserted Mont Blanc Tunnel late at night. Very polite and pleasant Gendarme almost embarrassed to take the money off me at the French end.
The coil finally conked a week after my return, half way to Glyndebourne with my parents and a picnic. Bloke in black tie hitting car with hammer at side of busy A road always makes for amusement of the motorist.
Otherwise: che bella macchina! Gran turismo, vroom, vroom!
This summer - a similar trip in a Lotus Elan Plus 2? Maybe. Note to blonde - not so much room for shoes.
Now, go thee and do likewise!
