Hotel recommendations for La, Cali, NYC
Discussion
Hello everyone,
Mrs & I are off on our honeymoon just after Christmas for a couple of weeks and after some advice.
We are heading to NYC and landing on new years eve and want to stay in a couple of different hotels. Any recommendations on what areas? What hotels? Where to avoid?
Then second week we are off to California. We have looked at staying first night around Manhatten Beach area as its local to LAX. Any recommendations?
After that it's down to Long Beach followed by Anaheim for Disney and surrounding Drag Racing Mueseums, Peterson etc...
We are looking at staying on the Queen Anne in Long Beach, it's an old British Cruiseliner moored in the harbour but after that we are not sure.
Any recommendations for Anaheim?
Don't mind driving as we have a hire car sorted for California.
Thanks,
Dan

To be fair some of the places we have looked at are pretty reasonable...
Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan for example £109 for the night then drops...
Where did you get that price from? Currently showing as fully booked NYE and $500 per night for 30thCrowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan for example £109 for the night then drops...
Maybe i'll bite the bullet and take the package deal with Expedia then for the week.
I stayed at the LAX Hilton for the first and last nights of my holiday two years ago, I don't remember how much I paid think it may have been about £60 a night.
I also stayed in Long Beach for 2 nights and considered staying on the Queen Mary but decided against it and went for the Best Western at the Conference Center instead as the Queen Mary looked a bit far out from the rest of Long Beach and I didn't fancy not being able to have a drink in the night because I had to drive, although it turns out that there's a free bus service between the Queen Mary and Long Beach (Route C in that link)

Queen Mary is probably fine as a hotel, but the thing is falling apart.. not really being looked after at all
If you want info on hot rod stuff let me know.
Be aware that you'll just miss one of the first rod shows of the year over in Pomona at the end of January.. no details on next years yet but it should be up here soon: http://www.rodshows.com/gnrs/

Ah ha
Right then.. get yourself down to Huntington Beach as that tends to be where lots of the shops are.
Foose 17811 Sampson Lane, Huntington Beach. Go during lunch time (I *think* its 12-1, its open for an hour). If you are lucky he'll be around and will sign/draw you a pic on a t-shirt etc.
Literally just up the road is Scandinavian Street Rods, 17662 Sampson Lane
Owned (predictably) by a Swedish bloke. Mainly early 30s coupes and roadsters, had a neat flathead powered shop belly tank when I was there a few years ago.
Just around the corner is Wheelers Speed Shop at 17662 Metzler Lane
Further down the road is Dan Fink Metalworks at 17872 Metzler Ln. Owned by an expat brit John West.
Away from Huntington Beach there is another brit: Steve Dennish owns Limeworks Speed Shop at:
7717 Greenleaf Ave
Whittier
CA 90602
Take tea bags and you get a shop tour I'm told
A bit further away is So Cal Speedshop, 1357 E Grand Ave, Pomona 91766. Ask nicely and you might get a tour, we were out there for the aforementioned show so they grouped us up and took us round. Remember this is the original name in hot rodding!
This is a little way out but worth every minute: Marcels, 1621 Commerce St, Corona, CA 92880. If you don't remember Marcel Deley and his sons used to do major fabrication work for Boyds. In fact they do this work for lots of hot rod builders. Last time I was there they were making a '34 coupe from scratch.
Marcel is Belgian, he trained as a coachbuilder and moved to the USA in the 60s doing general body repair. He soon became known for being able to knock up repair panels and it bloomed from there. The guy is in his early 80s. I said to him "I hope we aren't disturbing you too much?" "Ah no, we have a chat and then go home for some beer!" It became apparent most things are followed by some beer
Had me laughing from start to finish, really nice down to earth guys.
Dead opposite Marcels is Barry Whites place.
Back nearer LA..
Trad rods : Hollywood Hot Rods, 40 E Palm Ave, Burbank, CA 91502
Also in Burbank is the Old Crow Speedshop 52 E Palm Ave, Burbank. They race a very cool belly tank at Bonneville every year and are pretty damm good at it too!
Over in Orange:
Jimmy Whites place "Circle City Hotrods" at 931 W Hoover St 92867
If you want bits CW Moss and Reids are at : 402 W. Chapman Ave. Orange, CA 92866. Far as I know they are still both there.
If you are there on a Saturday and up early you can try going to 9015 Adams Ave Huntington Beach, CA 92646. This is the famed donut derelicts meet. When I say early it'll be done by 9am. If weather is crap expect a low turnout, in fact you'll be going pretty early in the year so you might find it quiet anyway.
There are more shops I haven't mentioned.. but that should keep you busy..!

As said, we went for the GNRS so there are pics of the show there and a few other bits (Queen Mary and the submarine). The NHRA museum is actually at the same site as the show if you do decide to go a bit later.
We got lucky with our Edelbrock tour on 08 but when we were at the car collection there were other people in there too, so you might be able to get in ?
Head office & factory is at 2700 California St, Torrance. If you want to see the cars I'd ring them and ask. The actual car collection is part of a warehouse a few minutes away.
We just turned up at shops, explained we were visiting from England and asked if we could look around, all shops were welcoming and often gave a guided tour. The gentleman at Wheelers gave us probably 45mins+ of his time to show us the cars and work they were doing.

Crafty, thank you so much!
You have no idea how helpful this is.
I had totally forgot about Foose and will definitely pop down there.
I have spoke to the Limeworks boys before about some parts so might drop them a mail and see if I can try and swap some PG Tips for a look round.
You are a star, thank you so much. I best take an empty case with me to fill with goodies and parts to bring back!
