Q : What makes a GT Cerbera a..... GT Cerbera. Only 10 built? Was it built only for the 4.5's?
Thanks.

I thought that the first 10 4.5s were called GTs before they just decided to name them 4.5?

Not sure about the 10, but iirc the 4.5 was originally designated as GT. The moniker was soon dropped in favour of "4.5", but early 4.5s had different suspension mounts, until they could find better dampers. You might find bits of the car with GT scribbled on them but this only has historical significance. In the main, GT means 4.5.

Looks like I have one of these mythical beasts too.

Took my engine to APM yesterday, and the pic below is stamped above the water/oil pump assembly. According to Andy, the "P42" means its a 4.2 block just with 4.5 liners/pistons etc, they also had steel billet cranks in response to the 4.2 crank's snapping, but the later 4.5's went back to the standard crank for costs, there was other smaller internal diffs to the 4.2's at the time. I didn't ask about bodywork diffs or alterations.

I did say I wouldn't be surprised if there was some trick bits in there.

Its not a GT*, but it is an early 4.5, one of the first. It also originally featured strange front chassis/suspension winglet pieces for the top damper mounts, which were removed by Joo years ago when we upgraded the suspension. I believe MarkH (or something similar, the chap who restored his yellow Cerb with the chimeara front light covers) had the same items on there.

  • My definition of a true Cerby GT is the Viola Pearl one with the various mounting points on the chassis front and rear. I've heard there are two of the same spec, but only one has ever surfaced. smile I believe all of the very early 4.5's are just experimental in terms of specification.
Looking forward to seeing what lurks beneath! thumbup

hello everyone, interesting thread again, just logged on because my ears were burning and what do you know, this is an interesting pic but seems too high an engine number to be a GT? ,7 (1997), week 44 (work it out, knocking on 1998 by this time, why can i hear merry christmas everybody by slade??), P (production), 42 (4.2), 00698 engine number,GT could just be the engine builder? am trying to remember who worked in AJP at that time!!!!!!!i need the chassis number to confirm,i remember the later 4.2's having 4.5 internals, when we didnt have the bits to do true 4.2's(what an engine by the way,if you want a full balls out speed machine late 4.2,engines used to set up a dream and the cars used to go like a rabbit on speed, 195 leptons on a motorway somewhere close to the fylde area and would have gone more, spectraflair silver motorshow car,too much info,i really did have the best job in the world, thank you Mr Smolenski!!!! for F*****G it up!! )thought the 4.5/GT was different but it has been a long time now,SMITHIES, there were more than 10 actually badged as GT,s before they were badged as 4.5's, FARMYARD, yes you remember correctly the production line called the 4.5's GT,S to identify the difference on the production line,in the early days 4.2 had aircon as option, single rad fan, 4.5 standard air con 2 rad fans,SPONGY,ALL 4.5 spec sheet said 4.5GT on them they never removed it, 4.2 then 4.5GT/standard uk spec, redrose(but the redrose package didnt arrive till later),GERRADIUK,let me have your chassis number and i will confirm, either post it or email me i will have a look at my list.

APM have now taken mine apart and it does have the "GT" internals as Andy put it, including the steel billet crank. I'm gonna head down tomorrow for a lookey and a few pics.

Hum, my engine number is 4200474 according to my handbook, where do you find the number on the engine? My car is a 1997 so I'm now interested to find the year/week code.

Whether the paperwork says so or not, Gerrardiuk's car is a significant Cerbera - whether people want to call it a GT or not is up to them, but it does feature a subtly different chassis.

Djstevec's car is an early 4.5, and as the engine rebuild and its history has proven, features some interesting parts. smile Not a GT, but I maintain the first ones were varying specs and 'experimental.'

BCA. As you know the GT has been covered in all detail, from different metal work to stamped GT. Not only by paper trails but by the guys who made them and the people that sold them. To sum it up the GT car is a 4.5 with a few oddities due to parts supply and getting it just right. Maybe one or two had engines played around with but there are a whole load of 4.2s with that.

It's a bit like the LT which there are only a few out there and not the amount you see advertised. My car was built as a 'special' acording to the works production paperwork so what does that mean. It means it's a redrose engine car and not some magical created beast.. Saying that it is a magical beast smile
