I fancy trying to put some video footage to music and muck about with some editing...

What's he best software to do this? And exactly how difficult is it to learn?

Ahhh....This is where my Degree in Media Technology comes into use. THE video editing software is Adobie Premier. But it'll cost ya quite a bit.

There are much cheaper/ simpler options but It's 5 years since I looked.

To use they are fairly simple. Basically you need some way of feeding your video signal into the computer. Then you tell the software to start recording, and start the video playing. Once it's captured you'll be able to do cuts and lay sound files over the top etc.

If you have a digital vid camera I guess it's simpler to get the video in in the 1st place.

edit:If you have Win XP it has Movie Maker in it which will do to play with.

If you want to do a proffesional(ish) job then Premiere is the way to go, but as some people said, it is kinda pricy to buy new. But hey, maybe you could borrow a friends "backup" CD of it!

An easy to use program is Uleads' Video Studio. Not nearly as complex as Premiere but still can give you decent results. Very easy to use.

An as someone above said, XP's own Movie Maker isn't bad either.

Windows Movie maker is decent but unfortunately limits you to making wmv's.

I use VirtualDub as well, a freeware jobie which did a decent job fiddling with movies.

Think I have a mate who can find me a "backup" copy.

Only thing I need now is a means of recording some footage to play around with.

Need to attend a track day with a camera methinks.

Record Prime Ministers question time and then edit it into a funny 1 min p155 take. Should give you practive with the sound and editing etc

Get a video capture card... Mine was about £24 quid and came with video editing software...

You just plug your camera into the PC like you would your TV, then record... Easy as that!
