Central Locking
Discussion
Hi guys, so some bizarre things are going on with my car as i'm fixing it up, but the most recent of which is that the passenger's side door opener (which is the button behind the door on my model) has suddenly, when half pressed, started central locking the doors ?!?! I take it that the drivers side should do the same as well ?
Is this standard practice ? If so does anyone know what might need fixing if only one of the doors is doing this.
I'm very confused as when i picked the car up, and over the last 8 weeks, it has never done this before.
Any help would be great !!

Nice one guys, will have a look. The strange thing is that the passenger side locks the drivers side as well. Half press the drivers side and absolutely nothing happens. As usual; the wires from the bottom of the locking mechanism go into a loom that seemingly goes into an unknown abiss?!?!
I'll maybe try getting the lock mechanism out and check the connections on there. I did have a brief look last night but could see an easy way of doing that. I THINK both of the solenoids are in tact and working ok as, like i mentioned, the passenger side locks both. Hmmmn.
Thanks for your help so far. More stuff to take apart and check though, this is quickly becoming a forte of mine! ha

Believe the solenoids are embedded in the bodywork panels where the kick plates go when you open the doors.
The solenoids are easy to get to there is an access panel in the bulkhead behind the door. Just lean the seat forward then pull open the panel the solenoids are inside. Easy to check the wiring and if they need replacing its an easy job and parts from maplins are cheap as chips (about 10 for a new solenoid IIRC). I had to do mine about 6 months ago on both sides, then had to replace the central locking relay as well.Dodsy said:

Dodsy, the thing that's confusing me though is that the drivers solenoid definitely works because it does central lock the door, but only with the button pressed half down on the passagers side. When i half press the button on the drivers side absolutely nothing happens. That leads me to think that it's probably more liekly to be an issue with the wiring going TO the lock mechanism. I'm going to try and get that out this evening but not really sure how to. Anyone got any ideas ? Will change the relay as well though and see if that makes a difference. Any ideas which one it is as there's (i think) 4 in the top dash. Cheers,
AJ
well the first thing to try would be to disconnect the solenoids then plug them back in again to make sure the plug connections are all good / havent corroded. The plugs are in that cubby hole.
The relay is (or was in my case) the big blue one under the dash top on the passenger side. Once the dash top is off it should be fairly obvious. When I opened mine up (the outer blue case just pops off) I found a blown capacitor.
You can pick up a new one from ebay for 11 - I have a spare but unless you are close by (Brackley) its probably easiest to get a new one. For 11 It may be worth a punt ? This is the one I have that worked in my Chim http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Central-Locking-Relay-12...
Oh and does the central locking work ? If you press the green button on top of the golf ball does it light up and the doors lock ? This also failed when my relay packed up.
It does sound more like a wiring or relay issue in your case though....
ETA: just realised yours isnt a facelift with buttons under the doors (should have read your OP properly) so cant guarantee that any of this is right ! Might be different on an earlier model.

Part of the door opening/closing/locking logic is/are the door switches.
Look at the bottom of the door/sill and ensure the "pad" is still there and that the switch is working - unscrew and clean the contact/copper grease it afterwards.
The switches also control interior light - does it work on each door ??

Right, I had a little route around earlier to see what i could see. I can now see that there's a little switch just behind the lock mechanism that when the button is half pressed either locks or unlocks the doors.
I don't know if anyone has looked at these in much detail but now mine only seem to want to open when the key is in the lock and twisted as far as possible in one direction, otherwise the central part just goes down and doesn't catch on anything to move the bottom of the lock down and push the rod down which in turn opens the door.
The solenoids were working earlier before i started poking around but now have decided to pack in again so i'm left only being able to open the doors from the outside, and with the key, which certainly isn't ideal as i currently have a snapped cable going from the door opener to the drivers door ! argh. ha.
I'm struggling to solve this mystery and right now would be happy if at least the doors opened without having to put the key in the lock.
Apologies for any use of extremely non-technical language ! I'm trying ! ha.
I'm stumped !!!

Hi again.
Have you the original handbook?? In the early cars (mines a 93) the handbook shows how to use the key to set the alarm/lock/unlock the doors. Depress with key in and turn one way and release and the door is "press to open". Depress with key in and turn the other way and the alarm is set, door locked and the door button depresses and nothing opens.
Only a remote alarm fob and the green button (if fitted) energises the solenoids IMHO, on early cars?
Also, since I don't have a green button on top of the door opener, and until I upgraded the Alarm with a remote fob, a few (7) years ago, the solenoids were never operated on my car!!
Never heard of the door button, when pressed, energising the locking/unlocking solenoid - you've an earth/electrical problem if you have?? Sorry not come across that before.
If you need a photo copy of the door locking instructions, just say so??

I've got a remote central locking kit as well so am thinking of trying to get that installed, then hopefully that'll solve all my issues...with the locks at least. Going to have to get someone to come and do it for me though as i wouldn't have the first idea of how to do it.
Ignition has just snapped though so that's the first job.
Would you be able to send me the instructions please and i'll have a little look.
Thanks,
AJ
