Well I've been experimenting with various different methods and this one seems to work for that tricky bit around the bolts:
Apply Alumagic with a toothbrush and agitate. Then get a large wheel brush and scrub (I used a Halfords advanced which has a plastic triangular head)
Add some car shampoo (this helps remove the polish) and scrub some more - rinse off
it doesn't leave any scratches
