I am going to be in the UK for a few weeks and thought that I'd like to buy either an older Audi convertible or a Saab convertible. I don't want to spend more than £1000, and the less the better. It must be able to seat three people so the MX5 and Alfa are out.I'm not worried about the cost of fuel, nor the long term maintenance costs. At the end of the five weeks I'll give it away.

I considered hiring a car but, to be honest, I don't want to, I'd rather have something a bit more pleasurable to drive. Speed and performance are less important than long distance comfort. I shall do between two and three thousand miles.

Which would you recommend, and why? I asked on a different forum and got, amongst other replies, a discussion on premium bank accounts and was directed here for quality advice.

Hi Harry ... welcome! My vote would be an early 1990's Audi convertible. Still look good, and many available on Autotrader for the moeny you're looking to spend. You'd probably get your money back afterwards as well, but if you're giving it away, please give me a call when you're finished!!

Cheers smile

One of the old Audi (pre-A4) convertibles would be nice. I recall they used to do a 2.8 V6 I think that wasn't a rocketship but was a nice woofily way to get about. The Saab convertible, as a generic type of car, is a classic sort of way of conveying maturer persons from A to B in a fun-but-sensible way, but I'd probably go for the Audi (assuming you can get a good one!).

PS, if you're giving it away at the end of your time here, how about giving it to me...? angel

Damn you Jezzaaa, you beat me to it by one minute. Honestly Harry, I'm much more deserving than Jezzaaa, he's a charlatan.

Your reputation as an Audi convertible-thieving charlatan precedes you.

Apart from the fact that the Audi looks a bit ugly, what is it like for sitting in? In my experience German cars can bit a bit firm for longer distances! I'm almost tempted to buy a Ford Mondeo for comfort, but I don't want to be so bored!

I shall be driving between Lincolnshire, Edinburgh, London and Oostendekuirke.

And I'll be giving it to my father who is a car enthusiast and would like a second car for fun. So sorry chaps, you don't get it!!

And insurance isn't an issue, quotes give me a difference of about £40 per annum fully comp. Since I only need it for five weeks...
