i am thinking of taking a break in central europe, flying in and out of vienna. i am looking for ideas, tips and suggestions of what to do and where to go.

i'd like a multi city trip and it can be anything up to a 16 days. where would you go and why? is driving an option? [i'd only want to if hire costs were reasonable or at least comparabel to trains]

budget is open at this stage. accom. would likely be a mix of budget and decent hotels, although camping would be fine if i had adequate transport. looking at going in april/early may.

at the moment, vienna-salzburg-prague-brno-krakow-budapest-bratislava-vienna is the ultimate option, but cutting out salzburg and prague makes for a lot less travel time.

all suggestions most welcome.

If you go to Budapest, this is a great place to stay:

I went to Jinrichiv Hradec (Try pronouncing that after a few) and Ceske Budejovice (Budweis if you are German). Both were very nice, bit quieter than Prague, but pleasant in a central European way. I have heard a lot about Cesky Krumlov, so that might be worth a shout. Brno is good but a bit ugly on the edges. I did it all by train, which is damn cheap in Czech and Slovakia, but a car would be more flexible.
