A what TV (for a TV newb)
Discussion
Hello chaps,
Time has come for an upgrade of the main TV at home. We've had a 28'' JVC for years that refuses to die despite me trying to accidentally kill it for the last few years.
As the new Sky/BBC F1 set up means either paying an extra £30 per month for Sky Sports or £10 per month for a Sky+ HD upgrade I've decided to change the telly for an HD flat screen unit.
So, can anyone help a chap who has not bought a new TV for about 15 years!?
Questions:
I want a 32'' screen this time. Should I go for LED or LCD and what are the differences?
I see that going for a 1080 HD unit rather than 720 is obviously the way to go.
Budget of around £500.
Ideally I'd like something with an inbuilt DVD player so I can do away with the video player DVD player we currently have.
Can anyone suggest some decent sets?
Cheers,
Ben

You'll lose little by going to 40". LED at this price just refers to the back lighting method the set uses. They are all LCD except for Plasma Sets which are usually best from 42".

Yes
Budget of around £500.
Sensible budget which should cover Panasonic TV's as well as Samsung and LG.I quite like Toshiba's as well

Don't bother. Get a set with a HD tuner instead. The cost of DVD and Blu-Ray is pretty low and if the player develops a fault you lose the TV while it is being fixed.
Can anyone suggest some decent sets?
See above. Stick to a good name, stick to the features you need,
Cheers,
Ben

Pretty sure the new Panasonic 42ST30 is now £550! So much TV for the money! It's plasma and pretty sure this model is 3D too. No built in DVD player, but I'd be getting a decent bluray player anyway. Waste of a good TV otherwise!
I got one of those at New Year.Very very Happy. Although sound is a bit disappointing. But I think that is more the thin form factor.
I picked up a Sony Blu-Ray player for it.
Just bought my third Panasonic Plasma (50"). Model is TXP50G30B.
It has 1080P, 600 Mz frequency and connection for internet - you can review it here

I bought mine from PC World at 579 including free delivery (next day, in my case).
John Lewis give a free 5 year warranty but they did not have my (discontinued) model in stock. I read on another forum that Panasonic replaced someone's TV after 3.5 years when it developed a fault, even though the owner did not take out an extended warranty after the 1 year standard.
I was advised against a 3D as technology is moving on (no glasses required to view a 3D image!). I think Toshiba has it but around 7k.
Happy hunting!
