Hi all,

After a bit of a disaster with a recent tyre order I may be in a position to swap my tyres with another forum member, however, I'm not sure that his are going to fit my rims either!

Can I get 255 width tyres on an 8J rim?

I've been hunting all over the net but Google just keeps throwing up rolling radius calculations!

They will fit but are a bit wide.

Interesting, I didn't think I'd be able to as the garage couldn't get my 265 tyres on there at all today!

Am I better off with 245's or even just plain old 235s then?

It would be easier to just swap with a forum member but don't want to do it if I'm going to have problems with the car!

not sure why they would struggle my SL runs 245's on the 8j fronts. and you could easily fit 255/265 on there.. unless they were a sill very low profile..?

it runs 285's on the rear 9j rims without issue.

It is simple enough. 255mm is just over 10 inches so fitting that tyre to an 8" rim will mean thesidewall will have to curve in just over an inch either side. this can cause the tread to not sit flat.

This site suggests an 8.5" rim is the minimum.

The answer is yes you can but it's not ideal and if anything happens, your insurers may not be happy.

Hmm, I'm thinking I may just give it a miss and fit a narrower tyre then, an inch of flex either side sounds like it could have an interesting handling effect...

Now this just leaves me with two brand new 265/35 R18 Falkens to get shot of! frown

Falkens not good enough like? smile

They're the FK452 as opposed to the Z something or other one if that helps.

Sure I can't tempt you? I'll undercut Camskill by a good margin biggrin

Nothing wrong with 452 however the ZEs are terrible. I found 452s similar to T1Rs but a little harder and longer lasting.

Can't you return the Falkens under the Distance Selling Regulations? You've got 7 days to notify them from the arrival date.

265/35 R18 Falken FK452s, you say..

Bugger, I really really shouldn't buy wider wheels just because some tyres have come up, that's a massively false economy, sorry!

As Fox says, you should be able to return them under the DSRs - even if you're outside 7 days, make merry hell and I'm sure you'll get it sorted with no more than courier costs. Send 'em via parcel2go.com and that's only eight quid a tyre.

You could try selling them on www.s197.co.uk - they're always looking for cheap tyres for Mustang track days.

They'll take one back, but the other has some tyre fitting grease on it (the fitter started fitting it before realising it was too wide for the rim) so they won't have that back as it's no longer in the condition they arrived in.

By the time I've faffed about with paying a courier to send it back to the supplier and then had to sell the other on it's own I think it would be easier just to try and shift the pair for £200 or something.

Go on, you know you want to, think of the benefits of saving £50 on the tyres, it makes the wheels much better value! wink

I'm not sure I could get it 100% perfect and they've said if it has any signs of attempted fitting (the grease) then they count it as used and won't refund.

Bearing in mind what I paid, I lose the original postage cost, and I pay my own courier, it would be just as cheap to let a forum member have them on the cheap! Plus I think of it as positive karma smile

It's already a pretty long shot putting 8.5Js on the front of a car with 7.5s at the back, and I'm quite sure it would scrub at anything more than half lock hehe nice try, though!

And fair enough about wanting to move them on in this way smile
