I'm after some roofless cheap summer fun so I'm looking at a mk3 mx5.

Any tips on what to look for?

I did search but couldn't see a buyers guide on the mk3 and I know nothing about them apart from they are supposed to be fun!

All help gratefully received

Seems £7k to £8k gets a decent one and how much can it loose in a year?

I'm open to other suggestions biggrin

Dude, you've got a 599, an M3 and most importantly, an R400.

What the sodding begonias do ye need an MX5 for?!

Assuming that you're not as budget limited as your average man, I'd give BBR a call and see if they've got a Cosworth supercharged example going. All the fun with a bit more power.

Are you my wife!!!

As I said, I just fancy something I can take the roof off on a day to day basis if it's sunny.

i agree with this. BBR turbo or a decent supercharged mx5. check out the mxt5nutz forums there are ususally some pretty decent examples for sale there.

Fill yer boots chief!

As for losing money, I dount you'll lose much on a 7/8k MX5 over the course of a year.

The Mk3.5 seems to be the one to go for as it was tweaked by the factory to make up for the Mk3's handling shortcomings.

A MX5 with BBR power upgrade, upgrade suspensions, LSD, you'll have the ultimate fun car.

What age does the Mk3.5 come in?

I'm sure the BBR cars are great, but as has been said I've got other toys for ultimate blasting, not least the R400, so I am being very strict with myself to not get carried away this time!!!!!!

Mk 3.5 came on stream mid 2009. The Sport Tech is the one to go for - Bilstein shocks, limited slip diff - happy days

ok ok, but it's a far better car than a boggo Mk3, worth the extra in my opinion. You could pick up a 2009 Sport tech for 10-11k

This. Get a sport-tech for 10k you won't lose much on these I am sure.

Cheapest sport tech I can find is just under 14k?

Any links to the 10k ones?

And to think, I've gone from 06 cars at 6k to this, how did that happen!!! biggrin

I was hoping someone would come on with a suggestion to spend 2.5k on a Mk1 or 2 because it's just as much fun and give me a link to a mint one!!!

I've got a 56 2.0 Sport with 80k miles. It's amazing summer fun but hasn't been driven since October and will probably end up sold pretty soon. It's lowered, with some alternative MX-5 wheels, a nice exhaust and it goes wonderfully.
You won't go wrong with a Mk3!!

Hmmm, prices have recovered slightly from the darkest winter months, but here's a few that could be had for 10-11k:

Perhaps it would be worth just going all the way and ordering a new one well specced? I think they usually have good finance deals on the MX5s.
Playing on the configurator a fully loaded sport tech 2.0 would be 23,258 RRP. You could probably get that down to about 21k depending on your haggling skills. (This is for the proper soft top not the poncy folding hard top.) And this would mean it was your MX5 that no one else has ever driven.

Oh and they look really good in red with the black alloys hehe
