Apologies if this has been asked before, but the search function is down just now. I am interested in a registration number in the next DVLA auction. I am working abroad just now so will have to use absentee bidding. How does this work. Is it like ebay where you put your maximum bid and they bid up for you until you reach your maximum? Or is your maximum bid the only bid made for you? Anybody have any experience of this?

I did buy a plate from a DVLA auction. Now call me cynical but amazingly my maximum bid was what the plate cost, plus tax and handling fee etc. I find it very strange that if anyone else was bidding for the plate and stopped just before my max bid.....
And if no-one else was bidding then the it should have cost what the starting price was.
Now I can't prove anything and it's all guesses but......
All I will say is as long as you stick to what you are willing to pay then there shouldn't be any complaints as long as the Auctioneers play fair too.
