996 C4 or C4S values
Discussion
Hi - I've been watching the PH classifieds recently as I'm after a 2002-2003 C4 or C4S manual, i.e. looking to spend 17-20k.
For reasons I can't fathom, the trade cars seem to be mainly tiptronic and private cars mainly manual. What's all that about - coincidence?
And although the advice I've read is to buy on condition and not mileage/age, the C4S which have recently sold have all been under 60k. Are those selling higher mileage cars not adjusting their prices down enough to factor in the mileage, or are they hoping to recoup the costs of the new clutch, brakes etc which many have had in the 70-90k bracket?
I am thinking 18k for a C4S 2002/02 with 60k miles. Adjusting up or down by 700 per 10k miles under/over, with a further 1000 for an 03 and a further 1000 for an 04. Then a bit more again for the options which I value e.g. +200 for PSE etc. And 10% less if it's a C4 not a C4S. What are the views on how much to expect to pay, assuming fsh, good tyres etc?

Lets hope the seller thinks the same!Dave Thornton said:

Mighty generous considering the part second hand not fitted is worth 1500 quid!Dave Thornton said:

You seem to be trying to be scientific which is good.....but judging condition is more of an art and needs experience.......kiss a lot of frogs before you buy or get someone who knows the cars...an indy dealer. You get what you pay for unless you are very lucky.
If you want a good 4S with sub 60K and good condition you are going to be way over 20K.

Exactly what F3ernando says. Your going a bit under price in your suppositions. Yes, when you start to hit the 50-60k mark in a manual its looking at possible clutch time.
The one you linked to may have or not had it done but if it hasnt then prepare for it.
Im constantly looking at C4S's, Cayman 3.4's and 997's around the 22k+ mark. Although in the case of 997's its the bottom bottom end of their market. Wont be until Oct this year i buy but having driven Tip, im going to go for manual whatever i buy.

I am interested in the significance of 60k miles. Are these cars all perfect? And what happened on the 2002/02 plates that makes them a better buy?

I'm just using this as a reference point so I can compare the theoretical value of each car before I travel the length of the country to see it.MTR
I'd fully expect to pay another 2 grand from a dealer with a warranty. Similarly my pricing reflects the cheaper parts of the country - I would expect London/South East cars to be more expensive. I'm prepared to travel anywhere for the right car but I will be getting it inspected wherever it is.

How many clutch's and sets of brakes are we talking @ 70-90k miles?! My C4S is at 35K miles and on 3rd clutch and second set of discs! Buy wisely at the lower end of the market as 2-3K in bills is easily doable.

I'd never buy a high performance/cost car private unless it had the balance of a manufacturer warranty left.
I recently toyed with the idea of a 55k miler which recently had a new clutch but instead plumped for a 29k miler for an extra grand. I just think the more miles the more farts the previous owner/s has unleashed in my seat!

You need to get out there a veiw some cars. When you see what crap people are advertising as mint and superb you will see what i mean. The advert in my experience can be totally deceptive if it is written by a complete bellend who doesn't care that you may waste a day and a s
t load of fuel to veiw his shed. You may be lucky and find a great one straight off. If you do, just buy it as there are so many dogs out there, c4s and turbos

I would suggest 20k is about right for a decent car if you're not too picky about spec. RSJ's prices are usually at the upper end of the market and so perhaps don't reflect the true market.http://www.rsjsportscars.co.uk/used-porsche/porsch...

A lot of cars to choose from and a lot of dogs that might polish up well! I had a c4s for 3 years and took it to 50,000 miles. It was a beautiful meridian silver 02 plate. My clutch was fine and disks were fine. I really looked after the car. I'd be wary of a looming bill so get anything you like inspected. These cars were circa 70k new so quality parts will wear and will cost money. Personally for the budget I'd get a c4s as they look great, plenty quick and with pse sound really good. If you buy a good one it will have been looked after and have had some money spent on it. Good luck with the search and if you don't get an enforceable warranty I'd have 3k sitting as a slush fund for potential repairs

This 'extra 5k' you speak of, where do i get it?MTR
(touchpaper lit and stands well back with tongue firmly in cheek, whilst wearing finest flameproof suit

In reverse order ... I get the point about spending 5k extra to get a turbo, rather than up to 5k extra at an indy at the top of the price scale. And while the turbo engine is much less likely to generate a four figure bill, the turbo is a more expensive car to run in other ways. And I don't have the extra 5k.
Optional extras - some add no value at all when secondhand but maybe the PSE on a C4S would count as a desirable option which would add significant value, though not its original price.
The more miles the more farts in the drivers seat - absolutely - and I will make a note to avoid the ruffled leather option.
One other thing I've learnt today is that there are a number of indy dealers who don't use PH and there are many more cars out there than I thought ... 2002/02 C4S with only 38k at Paul Devyea for 21995

I have an 02 c4s it now has 60k but bought at 50k.
Mine had a FPSH, and in my experience that is well worth it if you can find one. I think you could easily spend a couple of grand getting one sorted for just some tyres and brakes without any other issues.
Buy on condition is a cliche but probably true on a car 8/9 years old.
Very very happy with mine. Could upgrade to 997 but not really sure why it would be better.
