Looking for Van insurance and whatever I try it doesn't appear to make any difference to the price.

I use the van every day to drive the van to a single place of work and on the weekend for transporting the kart and mountain bike.

I am 24 and have tried all manner of thing on various comparison sites and the price I feel is still high.

I have found from the comparison sites that that have a thatcham approved alarm and tracker make no difference and neither does whether the van is parked on the drive or the road, with certain companies it is cheaper with a parent on the policy others it is not.

Further to the above could anybody recommend any further tips to try and get the price of my policy down or for that matter further companies who may be able to offer a cheaper policy?

Cheers

Ross

Ky jelly and prepared to feel the girth of commercial insure shafting you! Im 22 and last year my van insurance was 1500 and that was cheap compared to some 3k plus! try going direct to Adrian flux plus you may even get a p/h discount.

Had my VW transporter insured as a van with budget for the first year of ownership. I was 28 with 6 years NCB used for commuting to a single place of work with alloys and lowering declared. Paid about £500 for that policy.

Now insured with Just Kampers as its now converted to a camper van. I pay just over £200 for the same sort of cover.

I found it was best to speak to people over the phone and explain your not a typical white van man that's driving around all day everyday with thousands of pounds worth of crap in the back.

Its just the way it is with vans.I use a 10 yr old transit for work which is coming to the end of its life and is worth around 500! 5k miles a year and I pay nearly 700.

My BMW M3 convertible also on 5k miles a year costs me just over 500

Thanks for the advice so far the cheapest policy with everything that I want is 1067 and that is with 7 years no claims.

If you don't mind me asking what does the Just Kampers need to justify that it is a camper. My van currently has a makeshift bed but is there any specific criteria that it needs to meet for them to give you a policy?

I had the same issue, all insurers assume you are using it for business. I ended up going with Aviva and it was much cheaper.

Yeah they don't like it if it is going to be used as a camper.

You can get it change to be registered as a camper (for cheaper insurance) but I never bothered with mine was a minibus anyway haha just bought a caravan for this year anyway.

Just in the process of sorting out this coming year's van insurance. Job description seemed to make no difference to prices, but more annual miles tended to reduce it (at least in the range of miles I was using). TPFT v comprehensive made some more expensive, and others cheaper.

In the end it comes down to good old fashioned leg work, by trying as many insurers and comparison sites as possible. Often the same insurer can be cheaper via a comparison site versus going direct.

Quotelinedirect seems to have found me the cheapest taking into consideration cashback from Quidco - at just under 200 I can live with that.

Speak to David Auden & associates insurance. They do rally car service barge van insurance which is perfect for me for my van which is privately owned. I also include my trailer on the policy.
The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't cover windscreen so if it gets damaged you have to pay ouut of your own pocket to get it fixed.
My premuim is under 300.
They also like their motorsport themselves so are clued up about what you are using it for.

When I phoned JustKampers the woman understood the type of van and the way I was going to use it. Her fella had similar. It always helps when the sales people understand you.

My interior is a home brew with a 3/4 rock and roll bed, cupboards down the side and a removable camping cooker. It looks nice and is functional but its not recognised as any 'official' conversion. I think I had to send them a handful of photos mainly to prove its not some sort of builders van. I actually pay £270 ish, but I still think thats cheap.

I tried a few 'specialist' camper/motorhome insurers but they wanted all sorts of paperwork like corgi certificates and electrical safety stuff. That was too much effort for me.

I found a lot of useful information on the T4 forum under the insurance/tax section. Im sure that info could apply to any van.
