hi guys just to let yous know after the discussion we had earlier about what cam yous would recomend I decided to go for a stealth cam from v8 developements. They were very helpfull and supplied me with every thing that was needed to do the job.then the car was taken to Kenneth Brown Engineering at Hillington Glasgow where the cam was fitted. This is when i found out that this was the third cam this car has had and its only done 49,000 miles, picked up the car last week and it is like diffrent car all together no more hunting at low revs, its smooth all the way right through the revs and goes very well what a diffrence.Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for the advise and help from everyone at V8 developements and Kenneth Brown engineering

My 500 did 90000 plus on its first cam. I guess it depends how its used (lots of dry start ups due to weekend use only or regular use)

You want to put some decent oil in not that Mobil rubbish !

These engines hate fully synthetic.

The first 20 mins of a cam's bed in period is the critical bit. You can get special heavy duty oil to use on the cam lobes just for the start up and bed in period. (Probably full of lots of lovely zinc just for Daz! smile) The engine needs to be started and run for about 20 mins at say 2500 rpm so the load on the cam lobes is kept within sensible limits avoiding idle, as this is really bad news as the loads on the cam lobes are much higher at low speed. Get the bed in process right, and the micro ridges on the cam get rounded off and the cam lobe retains its hardness, but if you get it wrong, you get micro welds between the cam lobe and follower. These rip off the thin cam hardening as they sheer, and you end up with one soft cam with a short life span. I doubt for one minute TVR ever went through this process when the engines where first run.frown

That's my understanding too ... well, maybe not "hate" but I have been told to use 20w50 and just change it regularly by someone who's regarded as being one of the TVR gurus.

Glad to hear the CAM replacement has had a positive effect.......

However, "Which oil to use" is one of those questions that get different POVs from OPs..

And the other Q's that get the same sort of differing opinions are along the lines of...

"Sleeved or not"
"What tyres"
"How much is my Chim worth"
"Shock Absorber replacements"
"Dash covering"
"Replacing sump - silicone or gasket"

....and many more....

Never use a gasket ,a liberal amount of oil resistant silicone is needed ! use the whole tube
