Depends how old you want to go and if you regard estates as hatches.

BMW Compact
BMW Touring (Estate)
Porsche 944 / 968
Vauxhall Chevette
Toyota Starlet (late 80's)
Merc 3dr C class thing
Merc Estates

But if you mean current hatches - there are bugger all except the 1 series which is a real shame.

Not really any of these, I know I said hatch; but if we're talking about anything that's technically a hatchback then I can think of a quite a few estates, plus some coupes/'coupes', and a few GTs, etc.

Didn't know a Renault 5 Turbo was RWD though, or a Smart car!

yes, Golf GTi is normally quoted as having invented the niche, but I'm sure Lotus/Talbot were first... In fact, thinking about it, you could say the Mini Cooper S was the first...

Not at all surprising that there aren't (m)any RWD hatchbacks - the hatchback is meant to be a realtively small all-rounder, both fun and practical. Sticking a drivetrain down the middle of the car will reduce internal space and make the car less practical. The 1 Series is a good example - the back seats are tight and the boot is small when compared to traditional FWD hatches.

Renault 5 Turbo had the engine where the back seats should be. I think you are thinking of the GT turbo i.e. the one you would have seen down most high streets in the 80s and 90s, the Renault 5 Turbo is a rare beast.

All smarts apart from the for4 (or how ever its spelt) have been mid engined rear wheel drive.

Even though the old Cooper S wasn't a hatch?
