I personally and honestly do not know what to believe, it is 50/50 with people telling me it is restrictive and people telling me it is the best full flow filter on the market.

My latest mechanic took one look at it and said do not put that back on your car...and he gave me an enormous Bosch filter to replace it...buti have read although they are big and look like they will do the be better, they can be quite restrictive internally.

Whats are the facts??.. i have the blue anodised aluminiun body with paper filter... due to there size i can see taht they can get clogged up quite easily but assuming i change filters regular, are they restrictive??

Chris, l think the actual filter element is ok the biggest issue is the brass connectors are approx 6mm bore with approx 15mm bore pipe connected either side so doesn't matter what size pipe or filter you are restricted to what will flow through the 6mm connectors !

Chris,

I've got a filter before each pump, change your paper filter to the metal gauze one to improve the flow.

As Kev says it the brass connectors that restrict flow, I used a 8mm drill bit to bore them out inside the threaded part (didn't want to get too close to the threads) and a 10mm drill bit to bore out the rest of the push on nozzle.

The two pumps run quieter than the single previous one.

I think to know the answer some clever bugger will have to work out the Reynolds number for the restriction, viscosity and compressability of petrol how much gravity is pushing it and how much the pump is pulling it. it was 40 odd years ago i did this stuff, I googled this.

Mike's link is interesting (although it's somebody's opinion or tested somehow I guess).

The Sytec paper element is listed at 8 microns which is way smaller than anything on the link that Mike posted, the mesh element is 55 micron which is about right for the 500hp forced induction system post pump so the Sytec paper element may be restrictive?? Mind you I have a photo at home of the paper element I took out and there's quite alot of sh*t on it so it's doing a job.

Graham, can't see that drilling one end to 10mm is worth it if the other stays 8mm which is what appears to be OK up to 500hp but since you have two shouldn't be an issue anyway.

Would like to hear any other opinions before I put mine back together with various modest mods.

as Kevin says the restriction to the stock filter is the adapters used... I drilled mine out to be 8mm rather than the stock 6mmm but thats as far as you can realistically go.

Filter itself is very free flowing and probably great is under pressure.

I use aeromotive filters as they are my personal preference smile

Are you twin pump people using twin filters and twin tank feeds? I.e. an independant line into each pump.

Yeah us few have got twin out lets pumps and filters. Same as Andy I used the aeromotive filters. And happy how it works. But one my pumps are noisier than other. Change at some point

Slightly off topic Grant but with twin pumps could you not run 2x M400 pumps to kill any noise issues? They'd still provide the pressure/flow required wouldn't they?

And guess so but noise ain't that bad when they flow well. But now I got another new one. Makes the other seem a bit noisy. Not to worried. But prob change at some point to be pandantic about it

Rob, both pumps have 10mm inlets which reduce to 8-9mm through the threaded bit on the filter and on the exit the threaded bit is the same 8-9mm then opens to 10mm. It greatly reduces noise and improves flow.

If you loose one of the M400 pumps on full boost, what's the outcome ?
If you loose one of the 044 pumps on full boost, what's hopefully not the outcome ??

I actually don't have any filters in front of my 044's... I have sock filters on the lifters so no crap can get into the swirl pot.... I then have a very fine filter in front of the fuel rail after the pump.

This allows me to ensure I have no restriction in fuel delivery to the pumps at all whilst having a higher level of filtration prior to the injectors.

my duel 044's are significantly quieter than the original setup with a single 044, I can bearly hear them and they are actually right behind me practically in the tunnel rather that in the side pod...
I'm sure this is down to the lower restriction to the feed to the 044's

Thanks for the advice, it seems the brass connectors need drilling 8mm.

But i have been thinking, seen as though i am going to have a lifter pump after the filter feeding a swirl pot, i suppose the restriction to the filter would no longer affect the bosch 044?
