Recommend me some flatties

After some new flat pedals, I bought some 'get me by' cheap ones a few months back and they've had it, buy cheap, buy twice.

I want, in order of performance:

Large surface area,
Very tough
Thin profile (ideally)

Will go as much as 100, but prefer below 50.

I'm a clips man, so not really up to speed on what's what in the flat world, but these seem to get pretty favorable reviews on STW.

Thanks they're actually at the top of my list so far, they're meant to be direct copies (or rebranded) versions of Kona Wah Wah's.

But you can get genuine Wah Wah's for 43 too.

I really like Spank Spikes, but they're a lot of money.


I'm very hard on pedals, the only ones I've ever got a decent amount of life out of are Shimano DX's, but they're pretty small, and boring to look at by modern standards.

Another vote for Susperstars. Made in the same factory as the Wah Wah's...

Had mine on for over year, bashed 'em to bits, still smooth, with no bearing play.

+1 for Shimano DX30's. You're right they are not much to look at, but virtually bomb proof.

I went from DX30's to Superstars.. (DX's now on a mates Cannondale)

Superstars have a larger surface area and lower profile.

DX's certainly last the distance... I changed because of the platform size and profile... and because you just have to buy stuff now and again...

I've have the odd pair of DX's, they can't be totally killed, just wounded.

If they had bolt-through pins and you could buy re-build kits like the SPD versions they could go on forever.

Currently running two sets of the Superstar Nano Tech falts - one on the hardtail and one on the bouncer. Fairly new to flats, as I only switched to them in December, but with a decent pair of 5-10's these pedals are phenominally grippy and don;t seem to have suffered too badly from the effects of the notorious Cannock Chase winter mud.

I've got the Superstar Nano Tech pedals with the grub screws rather than the thru pins. Would recommend them. Great value and can take a hammering! Smashed them off rocks and all the pins are still there. And for extra bling just add the Ti axle!

I've recently put SPDs back on my MTB purely so that I could use my lovely warm Northwave Goretex boots with it, but were it not for that, had I needed to replace my flats, I would've gone for another pair of DMR V12s.

Mine have taken a lot of battering over the last 2-3 years, but apart from the red paint rubbing off, they've been brilliant.

Another vote for the DMR's, I've had my V8's for a year now and after greasing them before i fitted them they've been spot on. Don't think you can replace the pegs, but I think you can on the V12's...?

I have DMR V8's on one bike and NC-17 Sud Pro 11's on another - both proved to be fit and forget so far, both also very grippy (although if you do slip the NC-17's leave bigger scars).........

DMR's have taken a hell of a beating and are still running as free as the day I fitted them - if they ever die I will probably replace them with another set of V8's.......why pay more

Exactly the same as the Superstar Nano Tech, Nukeproof Neutrons and Wah Wah Wotsists. Only available in black but 10 bob cheaper than the rest for the same pedal.

I've gone back to SPDs - so I have a pair of little used Nano Techs in electric blue for sale - currently on eBay, item no. 200727563621.

Great pedals, but I do mainly XC, so not really right for me.

If you're on flats, Kona Wahwahs are the pedal to beat really.

Nuke Proof Electrons are awesome pedals, they use a super tough nylon construction, sealed cartridge bearings and are really grippy.

Good value at 35 quid a pair too.

Mot DMR V12 have just about had it after 6 months of hard abuse. Neither them of the v8 have the surface area your after though.

I've just ordered some DMR vaults, awesome pedals.

Can fully recommend DMR V8s, still going strong after years of abuse. Can't comment on the durability of the painted finish ones as i got mine in raw aluminium for this not to be a problem. Missing a couple of pins, but bearings are still spinning nicely, although a little looser than they once were. Size and shape are perfect for me.

I've got an old set of V8s that refuse to die, but they're not as grippy as the Superstar Nanoflats mentioned above. I've ripped pins out of V8s and Nanoflats - turns out both use the same pins so easy to replace them.

Think I'll order a set of the same-but-cheaper pedals on the carboncycles link above to replace my V8s though, bargain.
