I've got two oldish cars - an estate for work and a clean car for general use. Just got the road tax renewal - they've now jumped to 260 each

Staggering! On top of which each cost between 70 to 80 to fill with a tank of fuel - mainly due to further taxes. Where is the drive to constantly increase the tax road users pay going to end and without suitable or adequate public transport what are the workers in this country supposed to do.... cycle to work (assuming you work in an office, i.e. not a tradesman/builder etc)?

Does this ever end or is it going to keep on just ramping up each year and we've got to pay up and shut up. The figures for about 4 years ago are from memory approximately:
7 billion - cost of maintaining the road network in the UK
30 or 35 billion - the income from road and fuel taxes

Mini, half baked rant over

I pay more for my Golf and Mondeo (240) than I do for my Mustang so what you need to do is buy an old Yank and pay 215.

Road tax doesn't exist. There is no link between Vehicle Excise Duty and road expenditure - indeed much of the road network is maintained out of people's council tax payments.

Jaguar 4.0 V8 - 215 as it's pre-2001
Jensen 7.2 V8 - 215 as it's pre-2001
Fiesta Free for the first year, 35 a year thereafter.

Bargains.

Everyone I know is paying much less road tax than a few years ago.

The Mini's tax is the same as it was in 1993, obviously much less thanks to inflation, my car's on Historic, and everyone who's replaced their car has seen their tax disc price tumble (215 to 30, 200+ to 125).

S2000 ... 445ish

I love it, but that combined with insurance costs is ridiculous and will be the first thing to go if (when) I need to be responsible.

Crappy old Xsara - 215
54 reg Golf - 130
1993 XR650L - 74
1993 FJ1200 - 74
1985 XL600 - 53

Total 546!!

Great value for money, eh? Is it not about time we moved the road tax and added it to the already criminal price of a litre of fuel? That way we would "pay for what we use", and could do away with the whole cumbersome area of DVLA that deal with the road tax. Anyone on the road using petrol/diesel would be unable to "avoid" paying it. Just a thought.

When you're 21 you don't have much say in the matter.

For the last four or five years, every time i go to tax my car the amount i have to pay is more than is on my reminder. It must be that my reminder comes through at the same time as the budget or whatever date it is that controls VED.

So to answer your question,YES it does go up every year and I cant see any reason why that is ever going to change now.
