RS6 Saloon or Scooby WRX STI??
Discussion
Evening All,
I am looking at the possibility of buying either of the above two vehicles (having owned a Scooby WRX recently and driving an Audi A4 2.0 TDI (which is quite comfy). I am looking for something fast, a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing (hence the RS6 Saloon) and something which is quite comfy to drive (due to aging years - no I am not in "mid life crisis mode").
Any advice would be gratefully received...Any horror stories with either (I know I have to get an RS6 which has had the cambelt changed, coil overs done etc etc.
Kind regards
Rob

RS6 is a completely different experience to the Scooby. It's a point and squirt machine that is great for wafting along at mach 2 in comfort - the twin turbo power is addictive for straight line blasts, but you'll be underwhelmed on anything remotely twisty. As per earlier post, an RS4 of a similar vintage would be a better comparison (although in avant guise only). Dynamic Ride Control is the one to watch for - I had mine done under an extended Audi warranty - without this cover it would have ruined me. Other than that, the usual costs of tyres, disks/pads and main dealer servicing are the ones to budget for, but it's not super car horrific (other than fuel - sub 10mpg when you put your toes down)..
As for the Scooby being a nice place to be - wtf? The RS6 is supremely comfy, has the normal Audi cabin quality, is quiet and comes with all the toys - all the Subaru models I've been in are the exact opposite - bone shaking, rattly, loud and a bit naff in comparison. I guess it comes down to what you define as 'nice.'

I'd have the RS6 no question. You'd be mentally unstable to not have an Audi warranty on one as when they go wrong it can be ruinous - especially the suspension.
It'll have massive running costs too even when it's not gone wrong.
warranty is a must, the P1 club had an article in evo on the running costs of there exotica, most expensive was the lambo ofc, second was the RS6!!!It'll have massive running costs too even when it's not gone wrong.
different animal to the scooby, scooby for chucking about, RS6 for wafting at 180 everywhere
Afternoon all,
Many many thanks for all the comments. I have driven a Scooby (which I had re-mapped to approx 300BHP) and it was fantastic fun - however, I got a bit tired of every "boy (and girl) racers" wanting to pick a fight so I thought of the RS6. I will definately heed the words of warning and I think IF I get one that I will need to set aside a "car emergency fund" just in case. This is the first question I have asked and I am totally blown away with the response.
Cheers again and I will keep you posted on what I get.

Definitely get some quotes for general maintenance work on an RS6 just to give you an idea of potential bills... I've read through the VW parts catalogue a few times just to check out prices for parts on an RS6 and nearly fell off my chair at stuff like the price of brake pads & discs, etc.
Good luck though... RS6 is certainly up there in my dream garage!

The RS6 is a great beast. I've owned one for five years, and loved every moment.
If you want a B-road basher, then it isn't for you, but with some KWv3 coilovers and bigger ARBs that can make it much more compliant in the bends. The DRC is a problem for the car, but in recent months some people have found ways to repair it fairly easily.
As for power, I have ~540bhp and 820Nm with only a few modifications and that does mean that very little is going to be able to catch you. It is just mindbending for overtaking (pretty handy when I live in a county with no motorways). You need to be careful not to eject the gearbox with that torque BTW.
Cost wise, that is going to be painful. I have spent about 10k keeping it in perfect shape over the last 24 months without including a drop of fuel, but they are just over 10k for a reasonable one. Warranties have been hit and miss IMHO.
Look for a forum car ideally, and check out my buyers guide on www.246.com for more info.
