So My 97 chimaera failed its Mot today, on the passenger side outrigger, rusted all the way through.

So being based in Wokingham anyone got any recommendations for doing the work. At the moment I am looking at just the outriggers being replaced. But realise this could be a slippery slope to a full chassis replacement.

All advice greatly received!

I heard Southway Sports Cars in Fareham are pretty good at this kinda work, and reasonably priced. They have a trailer too. A lad I know is having his outriggers replaced currently.

I was there today for a rolling road session and had a nose round that chassis - it's a work of art. Nice bunch of guys too!

Another possibility is to talk to Str8Six (South Oxfordshire, just off the M40 J6). They outsource their chassis work to Willow Sportscars in Newark (see the chassis porn thread), so I can recommend that route having had my full chassis refurb by Willow. I assume Str8Six will transport your car up there on the back of their van.

I didn't think outriggers were an not fail as they don't carry load ie suspension etc?

Is it possible to repair the outriggers properly without lifting the body?

The seat belts are mounted to brackets on the back of the outriggers.

Outriggers are more serious than many give credit for. Like has been mentioned, the seat belts are mounted to them (although the top mount is a captive nut in fibreglass, so which would give first is anyone's guess!)
But as many also forget, the suspension is bolted through them on the front. The rust is usually contained at the corners, but any weakening in that section has to be taken seriously.

Look where the lower front wishbones bolt through, and the rears for that matter.

Yes the Mot tester mentioned the suspension loading in that area, it's the front corners that are the worst on my car.

So I have briefly spoken to Str8six to get some ballpark numbers. I pressume it's best to get both sides done at once, I was also going to ask about seat reinforcement as I like my pies biggrin

Thanks for the comments above, I will do some more calling around next week to get quotes.

Sorry to hear of this Jon. I'd seen it out on your drive at the weekend and just thought you'd been out for a drive. I've read that they can be replaced by doing a 3" body lift, can't remember where I saw it now though.

This place does supply only, or fitted for £1,500 to give you some idea of prices:

http://www.chimaerapages.com/newoutriggers.php

Not a massive saving DIY by the time you've factored in mig wire, gas, etc and your time to get the bodylifted...you'd have a long wait if I was to offer to help too, given the speed of my current welding job. frown However, I've got the gear if you wanted to rust proof it thoroughly after you've had it done.

Hi - Had a service at TopCats racing who pronounced the out riggers knackered. The MoT garage confirmed it so had them fixed by Martin at Lynch Hill Motors OX29 5BB and got an MoT pass. Cost 100 pounds. He can replace the outriggers for a LOT less than 1800 pounds. 01865 883106.
