Just got back from Wales surfing...418miles at a average speed of 71mph, 24.4mpg...

Anyways... didn't want to hide the key so wrapped it in a little wrapper and took it surfing with me.

2.5hr later, I get out and my key did get wet (I guess the Mars wrap didn't do such a good job) - suffice to say it's dead.

How do I dry it and remove/change the battery?

Any tip from other fellow surfers? All these electronic keys suck!

Best way to dry something electronic - phone/key/whatever - put it in a bowl of (uncooked) rice for a day or two. It will suck every last drop of moisture out.

Your problem is seawater - the salt may have damaged it!

Mars wrapper?! eek

Do you not have that small plastic emergency key? That would be a better bet.

Small emergency key? Don't think I ever had it...I only got 2 electronic keys with the car when I got the RS.

Going straight into a pack of rice for the mean time

Isn't there a way to "open" the key? And change the battery?

Mars wrapper indeed...only think I could think of.

It was either that or hiding the key under the car like most surfers do. But the spot I was at (Llangennith Gower) was a little too empty and the few people hanging in the parking lot would have seen me doing this...it would have been a shame to get back to the parking lot later on to see the car having disappeared.

You should just have stayed on the surfboard. !

Key is kaputt most likely. I sail a lot and not many electronic items (iPhone,iPads etc) have ever survived saltwater. Try to warm it up gently with a hairdryer and then in rice overnight.

Respect anyway...

Personally I would avoid heating it as that will cause condensation, potentially creating more damage. The rice trick fixed an iPhone donw the toilet.

Sea water is your bigger problem.

Next time, knotted condom stored where the sun dont shine wink

Manage to open it - clean it and gone into a bag of rice.
Will get a battery in the morning and cross fingers it'll be alright.

Next step: get to OPC to get one of those simple electronic-less key. Wonder how much they charge for those?

Dived 15m with a SEAT Ibiza key in pocket. It still worked, which is just as well as the spare was 1500 miles away!

Wash it in isopropanol (IPA-rubbing alcohol) first (helps get the salty stuff out) then 'rice' it. If you don't then the salt deposits will corrode the board.

In future purchase a waterproof wallet. I have one, fantastic for any electricals. Some will come with a band for wearing around upper arm, or secure belt for around waste!!

You should get one with the car if you bought it new. I bought a new 997 a few years back but only got the two electronic key's. I am pretty sure that the OPC hold the standard type key back when they hand the car over, why ? Not sure but it's worth asking for it. Have a look in your owners manual and see if it states that a master key should come with the car when it's handed to the new owner.
