Misfire checks?

Got first free day in about 6 months today so going to workshop to tinker with the chimaera.
I rebuilt it over the last couple of years with a fairly custom spec 4.6 v8 (typhoon cam, big valves etc)
It has a mark Adams chip for a 4.5 as a starting point, and it will eventually see him for a proper map but there's a misfire which I'd like to look at beforehand.
It shunts massively unless it's under load basically. Stepper cleaned, no change with AFM disconnected. It has a mallory dizzy (elec), ballast resistor and magnecor leads, could any of these be a dodgy combination?

Basically no if everything is working as it should- You dont need the expense of the Mallory, it wont any better than the stock set up (loads better than points- thats the big selling point on older 3.5 engines) but it works well enough and the worse the Magnecores do is cause the rev counter to glitch. A miss fire can also be an over lean mixture, and shunting caused by the ECU trying to correct something thats out of spec' but altering the mixture as far as it can, but its guess work unless you take some senor readings, or plug in a diagnostic tool. (Not just the basic fault code reader- its a bit to basic and insensitive for minor faults)

Many thanks, useful info... yeah the mallory is actually just a legacy from my previous car which the engine was built for. I've checked injectors etc all ok so think I've got to sit tight and wait for my rolling road spot... The AJP Griff said:
