Yup, you guessed it. The 991 pulls an effortless lead on the 997. Stats are similar, so is this down to better traction and improved/quicker gearbox (PDK) changes?

Poor drag race as both cars were clearly not in the same Launch Control mode. You can see the 997.2 brake lights go off, roll forward then Go, so the 997.2 was clearly not in Launch Control mode (car would have been static before going). The 991S was static before releasing - likely because it was in Launch Control mode.

A more interesting comparison would be against the GTS+PDK which will have Launch Control and the same engine as the 991S (a 997.2+X51).

If you look at the clip again, 3rd and 4th gear is where the 991 pulls a significant lead on the 997. And fwiw (and from experience of driving the GTS *and* a standard non-power-kit C2S), the extra 5% power of the GTS would not be enough to save the day either. 991 is ( or at least seems to be) much quicker once moving.

GTS and 991S has exactly the same engine, producing exactly the same outputs.

Differences between PDK drivetrain is gearing and the PDK software. 991S is geared shorter than the GTS.

So, 5% less power with a standard 997.2, not in Launch Control, and with slightly longer gearing = the video results you see and would expect.

Exactly. The 991 is quicker. Which lets be honest, is to be expected. I just thought the above clip was a good indication of by how muchsmile

LOL! Selective reading at it's best. smile

It is a TERRIBLE video comparison, precisely because it does not show by how much when one car is using Launch Control vs the other car using what is effectively a very slow rolling start (always slower) smile

Officially 991 is .7 quicker to a 100(.4 for GTS). Would also depends if cars were equipped with sports chrono. For me the real progress(for lack of a better word) is the ring time.

As Phooey and the Dealer Principal of one of our nearby Porsche Centres will tell you, I have done some testing of launch control on the 991 and I would make the following observations:

Firstly, I am far from persuaded that LC offers significant benefits over a conventional standing start and it is almost certainly slower than a rolling start.

I'd also be interested to understand how you think launch control had any impact upon the outcome of that drag race, because the ground the 991 made up was after both cars were well down the track. From the start they were broadly similar, as you'd expect from cars with a similar power output and transmission. But then the 991 leaves the 997 for dead.

I knew the 991 was quite a lot faster but I am surprised that it is THAT much faster.

Seen my first 991 today, white and dirty ( so that was OK ) parked in Sainsburys blended in , you have to look more than once to notice the difference to 997 . However the WHEELS ARE TO BIG spin

Lighter, more powerful, improved tech car in drag race win shocker! rolleyes

@ SP GTS has slightly more power than 991C2S (408hp vs. 400hp). But it's also heavier and the PDK isn't quite as quick, so even with both cars on LC, you'd absolutely expect the 991 to win.

Agreed that the 991 should win- Porsche quote 0.1s better acceleration to 62mph.

It's after 62 when the party starts. So the above stats would work out at .6 of a second quicker to do the last 38mph - and that is demonstrated in the above clip.

So you're right more relevant test is drag between GTS and 991C2S (which the GTS will lose, clearly)

Inside line 1/4 mile actual test times:

991 - 12.7 seconds @ 113.2MPH
C2S PDK Cab - 12.4 seconds @ 111.8MPH
997 GTS - 12.4 @ 112.3.

Point to be made is that the 991 will pull away but it will need to be nailed, not much in it.
