I tend not to trust the fuel gauge hehe

It was one of the things on the dealer 'handover list' when I bought the car; "don't trust the fuel gauge below 1/4 tank"; it was good advice (as I discovered on the one occasion that I ignored the advice).

When it's hits 1/4; fill it.

My father always said; "it's just as easy to keep the top half full, as to keep the bottom half full". biggrin

The fuel gauges are, like so many other cars, notoriously crap.
I'm not sure that given the inaccuracy of most(?) of the original gauges that anything you add to warn you would be any better. Just as likely to 'lie' to you as the gauge is.

Simplest way to guage how much fuel you have is to keep a log. Over 3 years I've got stats of ever fill, litres used, miles run etc. Its given me a base figure of 20 mpg (all styles of driving). It also tells you if the engine is playing up if you start to get 10mpg rather than 20mpg.

I know that 12.5 gallons will give me 250 miles before i have to make the call to recover me. I always carry a spare 5 litres in a can just in case to avoid such situations.

My 1994 Chim has a low fuel warning light which doesn't look aftermarket - if I'm running low I just go around lots of left-handers and hey presto, I've got half a tank again!

the only time i left my fuel guage on low was in the middle of the countryside in france coming from a car show before the Le Mans 24hr race and i can tell you i must have had used every last drop before we eventually found a petrol station..... NEVER AGAIN! scary running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country always keep it above 1\4 tank if not more

1/4 fill ups for me, and it can be anywhere from 58l to 35l that goes in. I've lost fuel gauge roulette twice now, but always keep a can in the back anyway.

Odd ... it's about the only *RELIABLE* gauge on mine!

And it has a low fuel light built in!

As soon as the low fuel light comes on *STEADILY* on mine (it flickers on when fuel surge in the tank occurs round corners of course) if I fill it up immediately then I get 45 litres in. I understand it's a 57 litre tank so at a notional 20 miles to the gallon (roughly) that gives me about a 50 mile heads up. biggrin

When it says empty, it is empty.

Maybe mine is an exception but the gauge does exactly as it says on the tin.

Nothing wrong with the gauge as long as the sender is calibrated.
I fitted a new sender and it all works perfectly.
My wife once dropped me off to pick the car up after a service and drove off with my wallet.Less than 1/4 tank of fuel to get home,no wallet, no AA card and a trip down the M1 on a Friday afternoon. How I got home I will never know.On fumes for the last few miles i suspect but the gauge certainly did not over read!

My 94 has a warning light. Recently the sender packed up. I took it apart cleaned and bent the arms on the variable resistor. and put it back. The gauge works perfectly....however... must have put the resistor windings back to front as now I get a warning light when its full not empty.biggrinbiggrinbiggrin. Just another job back on the to do list.

My 94 also has a warning light which is lucky because the dial itself doesn't work. Fingers crossed i never get stuck miles away from a petrol station when the light comes on. I'm going to start carrying some spare with me anyway i think. Don't want that embarresing call to have to happen !

Again 1/4 tank for me,although sods law says 1/4 tank.petrol station and Porsche all seem to come into yiew at the same time and as you know as a TVR owner you were put on this earth for one thing and one thing only and thats to show Porsche drivers the massive error they have made in car choice...
