My mat has got his heart set on a Landy (90/Defender) but as a bit clueless....
He basically wants one for th image and to use to go camping etc. Now the thing is he isn't spanner cabable himself and has never owned anything that isn't a eurobox....
oh and he has 2k to spend....
Am i correct in thinking that 2k is just not enough for a decent (well, working....) Defender or 90? will that even get a Series?
I owned a Series for a while when I was younger and loved the idea but as a daily it was just impossible and i'm a spannering car nut!.....with a TVR!
What sort of money are you looking at for a reliable and tidy ish early 90? (I think a Seris would just be too basic tbh)

I've just bought a 1976 Series 3 for 1.5k which has a galvanised chassis, overdrive and is pretty well sorted BUT cars of this age will always need some tinkering and if your mate is going to have to pay someone to do that kind of thing then it's going to get very tedious and very expensive pretty swiftly.
I'm not familiar with Defenders but 2k is OK for a Series 3, he'd probably need to buy privately at that price, but it will always need some tinkering...

I said if he wants a 4x4 then to look at a Disco or even be more sensible and look at Jap stuff, get far more car for his 2 bags. But alas...
We have a Defender 110 TD5, its recently come on for 130,000 miles and we have never had any significant mechanical failures. The only thing we have had which has prevented us using the vehicle is a throttle input fault which turned out to be a couple of damaged wires.
I would look for a basic 300TDI, most important thing is to make sure the chassis is solid but your mate will struggle at 2k.

If your lucky you can find someone having a barn clearout and get yourself a real tidy example for less than a grand.
I paid 700 beans for my 110 which came with a daihatsu engine and and galvanised chassis.
It needed all the fluids changed and a little fettling but it drove fine after that.
Of course in true landy fashion I was not content to leave it as it was, so I have stripped it back to the chassi for a full nut and bolt rebuild with stainless nuts/bolts and nylon washers.
I would not recommend one to anyone not prepared to learn at least basic vehicle maintenance.
That said I can't think of many vehicles easier to learn on.

2k as said before would get you a nice Disco (or even a Freelander).
I purchased a Ninety for 1k two years ago, and as you can guess, it was pretty poor, but I have seen much much worse at 4-5k!
If you want a Defender, get a 200/300TDI, and budget in for a new galv chassis, new bulkhead and footwells, just in case. 5-6k minimum.

it will cost him a fortune to bring it up to scrach and keep it there.

Generally speaking... yes your looking at a fairly tatty example at that price though.
