Measures 40.48mm AF so maybe 41mm socket, might be a bit tight so 42mm or 1"5/8 in real money.

I haven't got one here but could test fit one this week.

Still up one axles stands with the wheels off frown

Rich.

A 41mm socket fits perfectly.

If I want to loosen with wheels on and car on the ground, do I need a deep socket or is standard better?

You don't need a deep socket at all, a standard one is fine and less likely to cant over to the side as you put some torque on it. Don't forget that the drivers side is a left hand thread wink

Well, bizarrely not on my car. Fortunately it was so lose that it was easy to undo (chocks rather than gf using the brake), and to work out which way was which.

I haven't checked the passenger side, but I guess it's possible that they have been inadvertently swapped.

One more thing, 41mm is a little sloppy, perhaps it's imperial instead?

No wonder it's loose!!! eek

It should be left hand thread on the drivers side so that the rotation of the wheel tends to tighten it. I would not drive the car again until it is!

eek I would make sure you fit the correct Left hand threaded before you drive it next time. It should never be lose to remove these nuts.

Loose was a relative term, what I meant was I didn't need a 6 foot scaffold tube on the end of the breaker bar. The car has done at least a dozen track days in this state.

That nut, and your brake caliper etc is the only thing keeping the wheel on. The wheel bearing fly apart quire easily when not clamped together.

I'd investigate that a lot further and put the correct stub alxe on the correct side. If it hasn't been replaced with an incorrect part. I'm sure I put the part numbers in the alternative parts thread so you check the ID. They're off a Sierra from memory.

Left handed stub/nut is on the passenger side. So at least 'all' I have to do is swap them over.

A quick sanity check has got me wondering if I am not talking complete bks and the left hand thread isn't meant to be on the passenger side!!!

Whoops! You had me as well, I was sat here thinking I could have sworn the rule I created for myself when I refurbed the back of my car was "tighten in the direction of rotation".

I'd convinced myself over the last few days that I remembered it wrong.... laugh
