Mrs fancies it in the summer for a family holiday (3 kids)
Don't know much about the place, so I turn to the font of all knowledge.
Any good? Bits to avoid? Bits to see/do? Hotel recommendations?

All information greatly recieved.
Thanks.

Wifey has been there diving on numerous occasions, and it was in her words ' Fine for diving'
She has just got back from Hurghada, and said a lot has changed since she last went there, and certainly not for the better
I know the above isn't really too useful, but the general gist was that she didn't feel as safe as previous years.
My personal view would be look at Turkey for low cost sun!

Sharm has some really great hotels and great weather. When you walk around outside the hotel people try to flog you tat everywhere you go.

The town itself is a bit of a hole bit you'll probably only o there to eat in the evening a couple of times at most.

Pretty hot in the summer though, possibly up in the 40c range.

The diving is good and some nice hotels for not much money.

Was offered 2 camels for the wife, which considering she's 45 is not bad.

If diving then ok.. if not then don't bother, there are a lot of other places that you can go that are better.

was that the place where the family had been eating some cracker bread on the flight and some poppy seeds had fallen off and then they were detained for drug smuggling?

EFA.

The water at Sharm is superb for snorkeling, esp. Low/Middle/High Gardens, although most places are good and provide decent snorkeling off-the-beach.

it's full of horrible UK scum... like benidorm for the 21st century. That and rude pissed Russian scum too. Most of the place was a building site when I was there a few years ago, and it is basically just hotels, narma bay which was a nightmare, and the sea which was lovely. Get a good hotel and I'm sure it's great; get a bad one and it will be a hateful sthole. Oh and you will get the trots, guaranteed, no matter how careful you are or think you are.

I was offered 7 on my honeymoon. Told him he would give me another 7 to take her back the next morning.

15 months later when she f**ked off I was gutted. The camels would have been more loyal.

Expect to be badgered constantly, haggled with for cheap copied tat etc. If the wife is blonde they will be all over her like a rash.

And the Russians.....don't expect them to wait their turn for anything rolleyes

Crap place with a few couple of OK hotels and lots of god awful people. Diving is superb, so if you're mad keen it's probably worth suffering. These days I couldn't be bothered with the place, I'd rather go to Malta - not quite as great for diving but still very good, and far less of a hovel.

If you're not going for diving, it's a total waste of time and money, just go to the canaries or something if you're after a cheap sunny getaway.

Don't expect much, be culturally and politically aware, get one of the better hotels and don't leave it except for diving or snorkelling (which you should make the most of) and you'll probably get quite a lot for not much money.

I don't know what state Cairo's in at the moment, but a day trip to see the Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum is a decent box ticked off.

I'd agree with most of the others - Great location for diving, or just vegging by the pool and frying in the sun, but not much reason to go their otherwise.

It was hot in November, so I can only imagine how unbearable it'd be mid-summer...

Thanks all for the fed back, the intention is to sit by a pool and bask! Had some very busy holidays just lately and so it's time to chill, as long as the kids have a pool/beach they are happy! Heat doesn't really bother us and we are able to handle Being pestered, we don't want to sight see, and you seem to get a lot of bang for your buck relative to Europe, will just stock up on Imodium in the UK!

We went and didn't get ill.

Our precautions:-
- hand gel before food and after handling money (one of the dirtiest things out there)
- no salad
- no ice
- avoided buffets (except breakfast)
- ...and we generally tried to eat at 'decent' places rather than cheap and nasty...

Agree on the Russians - obnoxious doesn't begin to describe them...their word 'nekulturny' (uncultured) is an insult in their language but it's probably the best description.

We went last august for exactly the same thing you want.
It was 40+ but wasn't a muggy heat and you could always sit in the pool, days were spent either around a pool or on the beach reading books.
I can recommend this place: http://www.reefoasisresorts.com/HotelSection.aspx?...
ps they show the f1 too.
