Why was the prelude so unpopular?
Discussion
90s were a golden era for coupes.
The competition was immense but Honda didn't help themselves with the EK9 Civic VTi & Type R, DC2 Integra Type R, S2000, Accord Type R.
Looks play a huge part in purchasing coupe. Prelude looked like an NSX with its panels beaten with an ugly stick.
Interior isn't pleasant probably because it was geared towards the American market.

The 5th gen prelude is a great car, still looks reltively fresh today. Handle really well, 200hp engine and very surefooted (double wishbones all round and relively wide for a sports coupe). In its day though it was up against the 20v turbo fiat which was considerably faster, and then you had the 200sx which was RWD. If you could get past those two, then you'd walk into the dealership at the time and see an Integra Type R for same money....
I love the Preludes.
Had every model bar the very last ones from the Mk1 upwards.
4WS rocks, I still miss it now.
VTEC is also very, very nice and super reliable.
Extremely comfortable, dash that didn't look like every other car available which I thought looked nice. (was a bit marmite-ish though)
Everything worked, and kept on working. I didn't have a single thing go wrong electrically.
And good looking when the alternative was a 1.6 Mk3 Escort or some other euro yuck box.
The only thing I had happen to the last one I had was the coolant pressure cap valve let go one day, and as the temperature gauge could have been painted on as it never, ever moved once upto temp, I never bothered to check it and only realised something was wrong when engine power was going down and down. 1 unhappy engine, melted rings, etc. All fixed under warranty though.
Oh, plus the Honda dealer in Carlisle rocks.

Not the VW Corrado, Fiat Coupe turbo, Porsche 944?I think that Honda prelude buyers in the UK were mainly in their 60's and older, which didn't help broaden their sales appeal, a bit like the Lexus SC when was the last time you saw one of them?
I owned a 5th gen and would get another in a heartbeat!
Fantastic cars. The interior in the 5th is a lovely place to be. Especially with leather. And I love the outside looks. The rear is stunning and look even better with the motegi kit.
I'm not sure they did poorly. Seem to be a fair few about... Maybe just too much competition from Hondas own line up.. Accord coupe, civic coupe, crx, integra etc. maybe the prelude wasn't always the obvious coupe to go for?
If you wanted a nice gt coupe, you went for the accord. If you wanted luxury you went for the legend. If you wanted a sporty coupe you went for the integra... The prelude doesn't really have a niche to fit into
