Unless its a GT40 or even signature Porsche side stripes on a Cayman or 911, then don't even bother.

PS. Its OK for something like Le Mans but why not go for Gulf stripes or Martini stripes!

I always thought the Focus ST was too bulky for the 'OTT' (Over The Top) stripes. I had some subtle side stripes on mine which I think worked very well:

I like the Alpina range aswell. I also like that pin-stripe.

Does it really matter as long as the owners of the cars in question like them?

Personally I think they look good on a small number of cars (including mine), bad on others but I'm indifferent to them on the vast majority.

Not for me, I once toyed with having some on the Marcos and decided against it, but they don't offend me, even on hatchbacks, but I find it hard to get too excited about the colours of cars.
