Replacing Brakes and Gear shifter

Hi All,

Before I start il apologise for my lack of knowledge when it comes to bikes, but Im hoping someone can offer some advice

I got into biking last year and bought a cheap saracen rufftrax2 to practice on

Anyway, I came off on quite a fast downhill section on the north downs and managed to destroy my brake/gear shift levers completely.

I need to replace the gear shifters and brake levers as they are both beyond repair, id also like to replace the front and back brakes as they are a bit worn.

Ideally id like to replace the gear levers with the gripshift type and I dont want to spend very much at all.

Hopefully this makes sense to someone

as for replacing std shifters with gripshift, fundamentally it shouldnt be an issue, providing the shifters you have now are not integrated intothe brake levers in which case you will need seperate brake levers too.

you will just need to source the gripshift shifters and spend a bit of time on the park tool website learning how to fine tune the fronta dn rear mechs

They are integrated into the brake levers unfortunately! But the brake levers are bent and the gear casing is smashed so they would need to be replaced anyway (I crashed quite spectacularly)

I could probably keep the front and rear brake mechanisms as they arent damaged.

Are there any decent budget brands about? The bike was cheap, so I dont want to spend much!

www.dotbike.com are great for budget groupsets, last time i looked they had an Alivio groupset for £100 with v-brakes.they are not gripshift but its good qulaity stuff and at that price for the whole groupset its a bargain!

Thanks mate, the bike only cost me £100 so I was only hoping to spend £20 or so...is that wishful thinking?

yes, very.....

£100 for a compelte groupset on a bike that cost £100 may seem like throwing good money at a dying horse but you are essentially replacing all the moving/operational parts within the transmission and brakes.

Once you've swapped the parts over, you would be hard pushed to get a n equivilent bike for £200
