Is it allowed, or not?

Could I, for example, get a member of the companies HR department to look through my CV and suggest improvements before then submitting the CV in an application? Would this be seen as using my initiative or cheating??

I can't imagine HR would say yes. There's nothing to be gained for them, and I can imagine a few pitfalls to such an approach.

Big companies usually have job bounties for an internal person introducing an external candidate. I'd use your LinkedIn network to find someone who works for that company, and explore that approach.

How else should you do it then? I have used linkedin to approach candidates as an employer and as job seeker I approach HR contacts about possible opportunities.

Most company recruiters are on there because they want to tap into potential new recruits for their company.

As a job seeker use it to find opportunities but dont contact directly through linkedin contact via the usual methods. TBH i'm just repeating what i've been told. Which to me seem right.

I couldn't disagree more I'm afraid, I manage the pan EMEA hiring of professional services employees for a global tech company and have hired many candidates that have reached out directly to either me or a colleague via LinkedIn, Plaxo, Xing etc.

It's the way the world is going, social, mobile, open and towards the social enterprise.
