I like this video, the differences between the tarmac and the gravel sections always make me laugh.

There's a few videos about of Europeans bombing about in converted 996 and 997 GT3s on Tarmac stages, plus it's a car so it can be built/modified to do anything.
I become conflicted over this question which pops up once in a while, Porsche has rallying history and Id love to see them rally again with a 911 but my pragmatic side just says buy an evo or impreza.

As ade says, a cup would be a better starting platform as the bulk of the conversion work is simply that which needs doing to make any car a race car and it's already factory done.

In this video http://youtu.be/LRvcobW-LN4, Chris H & Francois Delacour discuss how he tried to enter Monte & Corsica '08 with a GT3 but wasn't allowed for fear of upsetting the Citroen/Peugeot applecart

Olaf Dobberkau has been winning a lot in the German Rally Series the last couple of years with a 996 GT3.
His car sounds fantastic.

Have thought about it but in this country we are limited to 3ltrs with 24V or 3.5ltrs with 12V - bit of a bummer
