The car is in for warranty work and the dealer has just informed me that the rear tyres are down to 2.8mm in places and have quoted £1300.00 fitted... (bit miffed as I think the 140 point inspection prior to delivery said min tread depth 4mm and I've only covered 500 gentle miles)
Has anyone had dealer fit rears recently and can tell me whether this is a reasonable price?

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

Before replacing the tyres, ask to see the inspection report from the 140 point check. On this there should be thread depths of all the tyres at time of inspection. If you are sure that you have been driving gently (and 1.2mm in 500 miles seems not gentle at all) then I would be surprised if the tyres were at 4mm to start with.

Check first

HI Chris,

I have the form at home so will be checking it tonight... However I imagine the supplying dealership will be unsympathetic to my plight... Firstly as I don't believe there's a minimum tread depth for used Astons, and secondly, they only have my word for it that I've not been pulling doughnuts...

I've now checked online, fully fitted from Blackcircles is £960.. £400 saving yikes

The need to replace with 2.8mm is just b*llocks... The legal minimum is 1.6mm across 75% of the tread width.

A brand new P Zero Corsa is molded with 6/32" of tread depth which is around 4.8mm. On that basis there is 3.2 mm (4.8-1.6)of legal wear on these tyres, so if you have 1.2mm left then its got 38% of its life remaining.

You might choose to change them early for safety in the wet, but thats a different matter. If you were changing them for safety in wet conditions then I think the new intermediate tyre is going to be a much more sensible choice. In totally dry conditions they are probably better performing with 2.8mm of tread than they would be brand new!
