Chaps,

Its that time of year for me, insurance renewal.

However one thing is pissing me off. When I go to renew, its cheaper than last year, however when I put in that some berk went into me while my car was stationary in a car park, and that I did not claim on my own insurance, I just went thru his, the renewal goes up £200!

I understand it is all to do with risk but, a £100 dent, equals me to have to pay £200 more? My insurance company were not even involved, I have been told you must tell them.
Is this the norm, or are they just ripping me off?

It is the norm for them to rip you off, sadly.

its stupid, cheaper to park on the road rather than a drive way because the theif wont kno what house it is. so that means its safer to risk someone smashing into your car at 30 thna parking off road?

i live in a culda sac with 5 houses in, so if i park outside the house my insurance goes down

wtf

Strange story. I have found most insurers want the business, and are quite keen to accept the 'other driver accepted fault' explanation.

Maybe go through an old fashiined broker?

I've heard you can claim on the other persons insurance for this...no idea if this is true or not though.

You can, it's part of your losses as a result of the accident. I'm not really sure how you'd go about it after the claim's resolved, though.

I suppose you could not declare it and, in the unlikely event that it gets picked up, say that you were unaware you had to mention anything that did not involve your own insurers.. I absolutely do not advocate it though, because a really arsy company could void your policy for it.

You cannot claim speculative losses, no matter what anyone tells you.

Potentially you can go back and claim actual losses when they are realised i.e at renewal.

What I am saying chaps is,

Why should I have to pay £200 or more just because someone dented my car, when I did not even go thru my own insurance?

I understand the "Risk" part but, chuff me, I can see why there are loads of uninsured people on the road!

It does seem unfair, but the fact that you were hit whilst parked makes you more likely to have it happen again in the insurers eyes and they might have to pay for it next time.

I've had similar joy with increased premiums due to being hit but a blown-out lorry tyre on a motorway.

Statistically, those who are hit, are more likely to be hit and cause accidents in the future. It not something anyone likes but its what the numbers show.

However, being hit in a car park when not even in the car and all costs being born by the other company does seem to be a exception.

Obviously people who get hit in car parks as a group are more likely to park somewhere where they get hit.

I wouldn't tell them.If you claim on your own insurance or have a claim against your insurance then fair enough but as far as id be concerned that was nothing to do with you or your insurance. That claim for the dent would be a black mark against the other parties name and should have nothing to do with you at all.
