In the early hours of Tuesday morning I woke up but couldn't move or speak. Went to check the time and couldn't move my hands or head - then tried to generally move and nothing would work. Tried to speak but couldn't make a sound. It seemed to go on for ever and my heart was beating so hard it felt like it was trying to escape and I was drenched in sweat. Eventually I drifted back off and woke up being able to move.

Utterly terrifying and hardly slept at all last night as was fearful it would happen again.

Am I going loopy?! Is it something to be concerned about! I've been having properly lucid dreams recently and wake up screaming and crying. I seem to spend all day utterly shattered now and completely out of it.

Sleep Paralysis.

It happens when you wake up but the body's mechanism to disconnect your brain from your body whilst dreaming to stop you acting out your dreams goes doolally and doesnt disengage when you wake up.

Wait till it happens and your convinced either that something is in the room with you, or worse that something is sitting on top of you and that's why you cannot move.

It felt very much like when you get a dead arm from sleeping on it - but all over and I felt very heavy.

Jesus if I had seen someone in the room I'd be sleeping with the light on now...

Can this be stopped or just something that happens? I NEVER want that EVER again.

Sounds a bit like sleep paralysis, I've had it once or twice, always when extremely tired and having fallen asleep somewhere like a sofa. Really unpleasant but, unless it happens more, probably not worth worrying about too much.

You don't see them, you just "feel" that there is someone there.

It used to happen to me when I was stressed, hasnt happened in years thankfully.

Google always ends up telling you that you've got un-treatable cancer. I'd rather take my chances with PH thanks wink

Well lets hope that never happens again. Sleeping was my favourite past time (always up for a quick nap snuggled up in bed) and I'd like to go back to that. There is nothing nicer than a quick kip in a sunbeam feeling all toasty and snuggly.

I've had it quite a lot, fortunately not for a few years now.

You never had that before? I used to have it all the time, not so much now unfortunately. Occasionally I'd imagine people coming into the room and talking about me (those might have been real) or being pulled off the bed or flying up through the ceiling. Best thing is you're awake and you can't tell the difference between these hallucinations and reality. Apart from they don't happen in reality, obviously.

I assume you mean vivid dreams, not lucid ones. Lucid dreams are when you know you're dreaming and are the best entertainment you can have with your clothes off.

I do indeed mean vivid. Blame being tired on that one!

Not sure about that, but it could be sleep paralysis.

Oh, and don't sleep on your back. That might help. Not you, the OP.

I've had it or similar a few times over the years - usually when I've been ill with some virus or whatever and fallen asleep out of sync with normal times, especially if I've fallen asleep sat in a chair or laying on the floor. Have often felt like someone is in the room or coming in from behind (the room!) but can't turn to look.

Not nice at all.

I also get lots of those dreams where you can't run or cycle or even drive away, either from enemies or as part of some race, or are in slow-mo. My dad gets it too, often someone he's convinced is pressing down on him/looming over him in bed. So maybe some link?

I now 'try' to remember I've had it before, that I am still asleep (sort of) and not to panic until i can come round fully.

Ah, but are you sure? Could be aliens performing experiments, or worse - Catholic aliens? You are in the mid-west of the US aren't you?

Sounds rather cool actually, I'd like to experience that rather than waking up in a place I didn't go to sleep like I usually do.

I don't think they're Catholic, nothing up the ass yet and no whiff of incense or whispered exhortations to "keep our little secret".
