I have a weeping rear crank oil seal and I wondered if the centre console needs to be removed to access and disconnect gear linkage etc., in order to remove the gearbox?

My Steve Heath Bible is on the way and I am not sure how detailed it is and wether it covers this aspect if indeed it is even necessary.

Any advice appreciated.

Rear arb, disconnect
Exhaust off
Remove prop
Drain oil
Disconnect wiring
Remove rear mount and support box
Lower box carefully
Reach above box and disconnect linkage, 13mm spanners
Remove box from bellhousing.

I think that's it.

Thanks for the info, so no need to strip out interior console then.

Sounds pretty straightforward.

that's right, console can be left in place.

Just thought, you want yourbellhousing off.

Remove slave
Disconnect rod that gear linkage rod slids on that is on top of the bellhousing.
It has 2 x 12 or 13mm nuts holding it on to a rose joint.

Then disconnect bellhousing bolts.

You may find it easier to remove the plenum to access the top bell housing bolts.

Use a swivel head ratchet spanner for the top bolts and about 3 1/2" extensions pushed together to do the mid way bolts from the rear.

Don't forget, all these bolts are AF but you can get away with metric!

If you have good dexterity, skinny arms and enough determination it is possible to disconnect the gear linkage from below but I find it far easier to remove the center console to undo the gear linkage bolts.

Doing it from underneath means doing it blind with your arms squeezed either side of the box up in the air for far too long to be comfortable, and it's a fiddly job.

You only need to undo the rear most bolt on the linkage that attaches to the selector in the box. The gear lever itself will pull out of the nylon bush at the bottom of the shaft.
At this point the gear linkage will be disconnected from the box but still be attached to the top of the clutch bell housing. Undo the four bolts that hold the box to bell housing, drop the box out, then you'll be able to see and get at the front gear linkage connection and disconnect it.

Agreed it is easier for a 1st timer to strip out the center console, it will be ouit in 10 minutes.
