What is considered an acceptable amount of time a car should have to spend back at the dealer for making good defects, faults and repairs during the first 18 months since purchase new? At what point would you consider a car unacceptable or not fit for purpose?

On a new car I would not expect it to have to go in for more than a few niggles to be fixed, or recalls if necessary. Certainly, I would not expect the car to spend any lengthy periods back at the dealer.

how long is a piece of string - depends what issues and frequency - but I think your on a hiding to nothing trying to use the 'not fit for purpose' arguement successfully.

Consumer law around cars and dealers seems to be a law unto itself

I have a car that has spent just short of 1 day in 10 back at the dealer in 18 months having various mechanical and electrical faults fixed as well as replacement alloys and the like. This to my mind is considerably more than anyone should be asked to endure, even though the warranty deals with them. The car is a Bentley!!!
