Well, I don't quite mean good, obviously. I mean what cars could you put a maximum of £1k down on, and convince people it was a much more expensive / newer car (vanity plate req). I realise that I come over as a completely image obsessed knob - I'm not. I found myself reading Readers Cars and found myself thinking "that was £1k?!"

Let's get started.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-VOLVO-S60-T-S-BLUE-... - ok cheating slightly as it's just over the £1k mark.

I sold my W reg X308 Jaguar XJ8 for just under £1k. That's a smart-looking car for the money IMHO.

GOod selection. SAABs are definitely good examples.

Love this thread already. biggrin

That 156 Wagon is the winner for me - such a handsome thing for £1k! Robbery.

I'd say so! Although the next generation A4 is probably not far off the 1k mark now too?

mk1 MX5 falls into this category surely, as people don't realise how old / cheap they are.

I've had non-car types 'guess' at how much it's worth / how old, and have been shocked by some of the comments:

People thinking it 'can't be older than 10 years (it's 18) or, some guy once exclaimed after the usual "awesome car" etc that "And it has pop-up head lights - that's worth another 2 grand alone" hehe

There are so many cars in this bracket now... Reckon the Jags are a good starter for ten, especially with decent private plates.

I think this is a good looking car for under a grand (actually only £850!):

Absolutely. That Alfa is lovely, particularly the red leather!

The MX5 and GTV are still good looking cars, but I don't think you'd be able to fool people that they are only a couple of years old tbh.

People were surprised how little I paid for my Cougar. Also, 406 Coupes can look good two. You might need to spend a weekend with the Autoglym products, but a good one should come up nicely...

You could get a good 306 GTI-6 for a grand.

That metallic blue £470 Saab 9-3 diseasel with 17" double tri-spoke alloys and Aero kit posted on here the other week in a '£1K car' thread takes some beating IMO. That was rather tidy.

The various MG ZTs around on here at that sort of money never fail to impres me, either. thumbup

Stick a private plate on that and you could be James Bond, or not...

One of my neighbours hit my old A8 whilst I was sitting in it and started to drive off before I caught up with him since he thought it was a 20 grand car and would cost him a bundle to repair rolleyes He was relatively happy when I advised him I would be happy with a smart repair costing approximately £150.

To be honest I was just responding to your post title, if it has to look like it could be new then it will be tough for under a grand, unless it's a Cat D. Probably something out there though...

No, no, I meant cars that look as if they could be, say, <5 years old. Something like that. There are plenty!

Got it, a nearly new Porsche 911 Cab and only £850!

You didn't say it had to be bought for more than a week!
