Sony Head Unit Ipod Issues

Hope someone who knows about these things can help with this
Got a Sony MEX BT3800u Head unit which up until yesterday was working perfectly.
For some reason now when the Ipod is connected via the USB socket although the head unit controls all work as they should to change tracks etc and the track info is displayed on the HU there is no sound.
Radio works fine.
I've connected the Ipod into my Ipod speaker dock and that plays fine so I know its not the Ipod output
I've connected the Ipod to my PC and played music through that so I know the cable is OK
Ive put a USB stick in the Head unit and it plays a track off that fine - so I know the USB socket in the HU is OK
I've done a reset of the HU settings - still Ipod no-worky.
I'm a bit stumped as to what to try next - unless theres some secret Ipod "mute" button I've pressed by accident I'm guessing either that part of the HU or the software is fubar
Can anyone suggest anything ?
