What shall I get? BUDGET DEPENDING ...
Discussion
Hi fellas,
I am asking on behalf of my father. Not myself.
To cut a long story short, he is currently running a BMW 318i. HE NEEDS A NEW CAR because there is so much wrong with it he has no choice.
He puts OVER £90.00 per week in petrol. He only commutes 5.5 miles per day! ... It is shot!
He has no idea on what to get. He seems to of taken a liking to the BMW 535D sport, Range Rover Sport (Unfortunately), EClass ..
Personally, I cant think of a more boring car than the 5 series. Hate them but he likes them.
He also likes the look of the XF but hasnt driven one.
However, I am petrol and power mad. I have made the recomendation of an Jaguar XK/XKR, 997 Carrera (WHICH HE LOVES, BUT CUSTOMERS WONT), Quatroporte (reliability?), 7 Series (too Ugly)...
For the Jag XK, can anyone shed any light on running costs ... He doesnt want to be spending fortunes on running costs. NO M5 running costs please ...
Budget is a strange one ... HE is looking to have it for quite a few years. Over 6 I imagine so reliability is an importance.
Overall, I doubt he will want to spoon out over £30,000 and he wants to refrain from making crass impressions on customers and employees.
Any help is appreciated. Pistonheads seems to be the best place for honest advice and tips ....

Merc S320cdi. In black.
Most of the performance orientated machinery you list has "M5 running costs".
Unless by "No M5 running costs" you mean you want to spend more, for example in the case of the Quattroporte.
Hmm ... I love the SClass!!!!! Most of the performance orientated machinery you list has "M5 running costs".

That is one that skipped my radar.
We are heading up to see a silver 535d tomorrow.
To be honest, I am not that fussed.
A friend of mine has just bought an Audi RS4 in sprint blue for £18,000 ...
Why would you spend just over £14,000 for a 5 series?
I am confused. Maybe its my naivity towards running an RS4 compared to the 5 series?!

Because they're completely different cars and meant for different purposes. The 535d is cheaper, better at wafting and more economical. You may not choose to spend 14k on one, but if you wanted to put reasonable mileage on a reliable (ish) larger car and it not cost the earth then it's a reasonable choice. That said, it's probably not a great choice considering his mileage. To be honest, I am not that fussed.

I just cant fathom some people who want to buy a derv to do a milage that is so low it could be cycled. Nothing about it makes sense. Ask him why he seems to be set on a derv and whatever answer he gives tell him hes wrong.
Bang on the money! If he's doing a maximum of 40 miles a week then a big petrol will (pessimistically) romp through a massive 2 gallons of fuel, versus maybe 1.5 for the diesel, a saving of about £2.68 per week. If a diesel costs £1,000 more than an equivalent petrol then it'll take him over 7 years to recoup the cost.Exactly. Economically, you can source the EXACT same vehicle but with a 4.5 litre V8 for half the money!!!
Lol.
People make their minds up without looking at the numbers. They set out for a diesel because the fuel is " cheaper " but they spend much more on the initial purchasing price of the car.
Very strange to me ...
Im trying to get him to look at an RS4 as I feel that is perfect for his everyday needs. We have taken one out for a spin and he loved it. But its the day to day running costs of fuel etc... Also, I want to be insured on it lol. Im not interested in a 5 series.
We are driving different cars all day tomorrow as the 5 he liked has sold (THANK GOD) lol
Thanks for the replies!!

Odd thread.
£90 a week to cover 40 miles in a 318i?
That would be 1mpg??
Which leads me to suspect a huge maths fail or some lies.
Spending £30k to save money is an odd tactic too.

For 40 miles a week, you can buy a nice push-bike for £30,000, and his 'customers' wouldn't know how much he's got to spunk on frivolities.
